2 mile range sucks because you want 10-15 mile range to get 5 mile talking

When I tested it, it's a crowded city but suburban mostly low height buildings. However, it's late night, not sure it made difference.
But for travel and near distance uses, these are perfect, comes with a clipper and clip to belt or pocket, and it's loud. Durable and reliable.

We tested the walkie talkies again with full battery charge and got the same result as I had posted before. At about 8/10 of a mile we began hearing some choppiness in the audio signal.

If you want to test how they perform in your area, have one person stay at home, have the other person set odometer on their vehicle to 0.0 and have them check in every tenth of a mile.

Not the 2 miles they publish, but the range I had expected before buying. These have been great for kids to play with.

Just be careful, if the kids begin clipping these to their shirt collar to act like police, it will very likely stretch out their t-shirt.

You programmed these units on sale to operate the repeater? The transmit and receive are usually on different frequency offsets... What software did you use?
Yes, used Chirp. Also set the PL tone for the repeater.

FWIW, being a ham, we programmed one for getting into a local 440 repeater which is 15 miles away. No issues getting into it, but then the repeater has altitude and a high gain antenna.
I'm curious what capabilities does this have that CHIRP can enable

Also, any idea whether I can use the programming cable for my Baofeng UV-5R?

Can you keep this plugged in and always on? Looking for intercom kind of functionality when teenager is in their room.

That's what I used, a UV5R programming cable.

IIRC it's as capable as the UV-5R. Just no display, only UHF, 3W on high, not sure what the low power is, and 16 channels total.

Yes, though Li batteries don't like to be kept 100% charged all the time (it decreases their capacity). That said, if it's powered all the time, who cares.

it's better than that. UHF is line of sight, and these I think are 3W.

Keep the antenna pointing up, use a frequency not already in-use. Better than FRS as it has 6x the power. Same band as FRS so whatever range you get with FRS, you'll get with these.

Did you use the Chirp software to program it.

Are there any GMRS radios that don't have so many buttons on the front, are on the small side, and easier to carry?

Check out the baofeng mp31. Just as cheap as this set, like 12-15$ each. USB C charging, NOAA, repeater programming, no LCD and external buttons, CHIRP programmable. Only thing is it goes up to 3w only. But it's plenty for most uses
