OK I did a study on this since I bought fake Airpods Max from an eBay seller. I refused to return it since these MOFOs would just resell it to some other sucker. I bought one of these "Like New" and will be watching the detail on this to check. Here are the clues I used for an eBay dispute, so hopefully this helps someone else who's concerned:
1) Serial number may be a legitimate Apple serial (based on the lookup on Apple's site). This is highly deceptive and often confuses most people.
2) Box and headphones show many signs of counterfeiting. Here are some tell-tale signs:
- On box, the sticker at bottom of the box shows: Compatible with latest iOS and iPadOS devices, Apple Watch or Mac. IOS iPadOS, Apple Watch Mac. This last line is translated into 4 languages in the original and IOS is definitely not misspelled.
- OEM box has AirPods Max Sky Blue with Blue Headband. Counterfeit box as follows: Headphone Max Space Gray with Black Headband
These are not authentic AirPods Max headphones. They are plastic cups on the ear, not "beautifully anodized aluminum cups feature a revolutionary mechanism that allows each cup to rotate independently and balance pressure" (https://www.apple.com/airpods-max/).
- The LED light is blue and red when pairing, while legitimate Apple AirPods Max are actually amber and white. https://support.apple.com/en-us/119838
- A tell-tale functionality with fakes it does not support Automatic Switching between Apple devices (Bluetooth connect with two devices and hand-off automatically when playing music or video etc.): https://support.apple.com/en-us/104988

I don't recommend buying used Apple products from Amazon. Had lots of bad experiences in the past

Whats there process for assuring the used product isn't a swap out with a fake? Do they validate authenticity somehow? I've heard these are notorious for that

Purchased two different colors, both came in very good condition...however both were still paired to the previous owner and my iphone warned me they could track my location.......
Apple coverage ends in April for both of them.
Probably going to return both and keep the AAFES deal
Yeah, my first purple set was still paired to the previous owner. I wonder if the Apple Store would be able to reset it.

Grabbed a "Like New" orange set, as well, for $343.xx after tax. Hopefully one of them will work out as advertised.

My order was cancelled due to non availability. Reached out to customer service to complain and within 5 mins was issued a $75GC for inconvenience. Happy since I had already price matched BB and got a black one for $399. Saved me the headache of returning to Amazon.

just got this today, they were fake. They had plastic cups, a legit serial number and box, but the sync lights were red/blue. shoutouts to dantheman82 for his analysis, it was spot on with mine.

I just got mine today, they were fake (plastic ear cups, red/blue sync lights, etc) and had the exact same stuff that dantheman had pointed out. Reached out to amazon support and they're gonna send a replacement... hope that pulls through

Took the risk and ordered a pair of blue ones which were delivered today.

Amazon purchase history cites them as "mint" condition though I thought it said 'like new' during checkout. Either way the box was pretty clean aside from LPN stickers and packing tape which Amazon slapped on there. The AirPods and case are seemingly new. I can't find a single blemish or mark on them - not even a fingerprint smudge. The USB-C cable was still coiled up and unused.

After much internet sleuthing and comparisons, as far as I can tell, they're legit and not knockoffs/counterfeits. Serial on box and AirPods match, metal housing, green/white/orange LED, smooth operation of the controls, FindMy works, etc. I was even able to purchase AppleCare for them.

Overall I'm quite happy. Hope others have a similar experience

My "mint" condition blue ones just arrived and they're legit. Hardware/software/box serial numbers all match, seamless iCloud pairing, Find My works, etc. Only downside is the warranty shows valid through March 2026, so I'm outside the window to add AppleCare. Was on the fence about that anyhow, so for the price I don't mind.

I dunno what to do here? My first pair was swapped with a used lightning pair, and the second one was linked to someone Apple ID, but they bought a year of AC+. So it's literally a steal! I may just keep those and pray they renew the AC+ next may lmao.

You can take it to Apple within a year and buy AC+ still. They just gotta inspect it first to make sure, no issues first.

Apparently Apple can't reset it, but my second pair came paired already and has AC+ until May 2026 lol.

That's a bit problematic then, isn't it? I mean, I don't really care if the other "owner" can see where they are, but someone I might end up re-selling them to down the line might.

I bought two pairs through "regular" Amazon and the one bad pair through Amazon Business. If nothing else, it has exposed to me just how bad Amazon Business is. Not only is there no way to chat with support - you can only call and the quality of their soft phones is atrocious - but they also don't have nearly the same customer satisfaction tools at their disposal. And this is what I ended up with as result of my complaint:
Quote :
Hello,

Thank you for contacting us regarding your order xxx-xxxxxxxx.

Because we noticed abnormal activity on your account, we need to verify your identity before we can consider your request for a refund or replacement. We may also ask for additional information before granting your request.

How will you verify my identity?
To verify your identity, upload a valid government-issued identity document. To upload your identity document, go to our secure customer portal:
https://account-status.amazon.com...validation

Note that the link will expire after 6 days.

All personal information that you provide will be handled in accordance with our Privacy Notice. To review our Privacy Notice, go to "Amazon and Your Personal Information":
https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/cu...splay.html

What happens when I submit my ID document?
We will review your order and your account and verify your identity through one of our third-party service providers. Once you have submitted your information through the secure customer portal, it will take us 3 business days to determine an outcome. At that point, you can contact us to learn the outcome of the investigation.

What happens if I do not submit my ID document?
You may continue shopping on Amazon, but you will no longer be eligible for a refund on the order xxx-xxxxxxx. Also, you will not be able to investigate this order issue further.
Textbook retaliation. I did submit my ID and I'll fight it through Amex if I have to, but this is beyond ridiculous.

If you see the message "The owner of this item will be able to see its location" during pairing, it means the Activation Lock is still linked to the previous owner's Apple ID.

They still have control and can effectively disable the device or play alert sound remotely. I chose to return mine because of this. It's especially annoying to see someone else's masked email address and warning messages pop up every time I try pairing with a new device

Probably but the original owners don't know/care. It's just tells them it's been linked to someone else, and who knows. Most people don't know they need to remove them.

Has anyone had this happen? I just got an email regarding my orange set – apparently they are getting delivered tomorrow, but Amazon is supposed to send me a password that I am supposed to give to the delivery driver. First time I've ever had this happen.

Was able to message them voicing frustration that I could only do "UPS pickup" for the return and how I received two that were still paired. After a little back and forth, they said they would refund me the difference of $134 from a new pair once it gets delivered. So essentially paying $316 for a new pair, and in black.

I get the feeling there's going to be a lot of these for them to deal with in the coming days…
