OK I did a study on this since I bought fake Airpods Max from an eBay seller. I refused to return it since these MOFOs would just resell it to some other sucker. I bought one of these "Like New" and will be watching the detail on this to check. Here are the clues I used for an eBay dispute, so hopefully this helps someone else who's concerned:
1) Serial number may be a legitimate Apple serial (based on the lookup on Apple's site). This is highly deceptive and often confuses most people.
2) Box and headphones show many signs of counterfeiting. Here are some tell-tale signs:
- On box, the sticker at bottom of the box shows: Compatible with latest iOS and iPadOS devices, Apple Watch or Mac. IOS iPadOS, Apple Watch Mac. This last line is translated into 4 languages in the original and IOS is definitely not misspelled.
- OEM box has AirPods Max Sky Blue with Blue Headband. Counterfeit box as follows: Headphone Max Space Gray with Black Headband
These are not authentic AirPods Max headphones. They are plastic cups on the ear, not "beautifully anodized aluminum cups feature a revolutionary mechanism that allows each cup to rotate independently and balance pressure" (https://www.apple.com/airpods-max/).
- The LED light is blue and red when pairing, while legitimate Apple AirPods Max are actually amber and white. https://support.apple.com/en-us/119838
- A tell-tale functionality with fakes it does not support Automatic Switching between Apple devices (Bluetooth connect with two devices and hand-off automatically when playing music or video etc.): https://support.apple.com/en-us/104988

I don't recommend buying used Apple products from Amazon. Had lots of bad experiences in the past

Whats there process for assuring the used product isn't a swap out with a fake? Do they validate authenticity somehow? I've heard these are notorious for that

Got my orange "as new" pair today. They look pristine, still wrapped up in that papier-mache Apple puts around their devices. My phone picked up the warranty as expiring 10/8/2025, but I called in with my purchase date and they're updating the purchase date to 7/11/2025, so it should extend it out. Double-checked the usual items and these do appear to be genuine.

Just re-paired them and, sure enough, warranty now extended until July 2026. Not bad for $343. Guess I'll be sending the "Used-Good" purples back once they arrive on Wednesday.

UPS picked up my pair that someone swapped out with a lightning pair inside. So I'm waiting to see if AMZ screws me on the return somehow. CS said I'm fine and it happens. So I did take a picture of them saying that. Incase they screw me over. I wasn't paying that much for a crappy pink lighting pair named LittleMac when I tested it out.

Apparently if you factory reset the AirPods Max, It may help with removing the previous person from tracking/seeing the AirPods. It helped me!

Reset them to factory settings: Press and hold the noise control button and the Digital Crown for 15 seconds.

I'm assuming maybe they were not fully removed from the previous owner account and this may help in getting it to finally be removed? I don't know, I seen this all over reddit, and it worked for me. I unpaired them 5 times and got no notification when pairing the headphones they were linked to another ID.

Yeah, my first purple set was still paired to the previous owner. I wonder if the Apple Store would be able to reset it.

Grabbed a "Like New" orange set, as well, for $343.xx after tax. Hopefully one of them will work out as advertised.

That's good info to have, just in case. My orange ones arrived basically good as new, thankfully.

My "Used - Good" purple ones also arrived today. There was still paper on them - the only problem was they were silver, not purple, although they were in a purple box. So, naturally, they are going back and Amazon told me they were going to refund me the difference between them and a new set, any color. They even said they'd throw in AppleCare (that'll be very interesting). I'm going to hang on to my orange ones until this is all settled by the end of the week, just in case they welch, but I guess I can't fault $316 for a new set with AC+ if that comes good.

You're better off buying the ones with AC+, and having them refund you the total amount instead.

The ones I got where someone swapped in a lightning pair, ended up being refunded without issues. Thankfully I didn't have any issues there! I lived an hour from Indy, Where it was taken too. So took an day for em to get it, and a day for the refund to come through.

That's what I did. Bought the ones with AC+ and I expect them to refund the difference between them and the purple set, as promised. But, given how awful Amazon customer support has been lately, I'm not counting my chickens until I see the credit on my statement.

Got my Like New starlight version yesterday. They're brand new and sealed. The outer shipping package box had some damage, but the product box itself was brand new and still had the pull seals on it. Going to open it soon and see if it's legit but Im very hopeful!

Was able to message them voicing frustration that I could only do "UPS pickup" for the return and how I received two that were still paired. After a little back and forth, they said they would refund me the difference of $134 from a new pair once it gets delivered. So essentially paying $316 for a new pair, and in black.
Did you ever get your refund? I got a similar one of mine denied today.

Discovered an interesting thing when trying to return a pair I hadn't disconnected from my account. Amazon seems to know when the AirPods are still on your account because it wouldn't let me submit a return until I had removed them from Find My. So I'm going to guess that the ones that show up still paired are a product of super fraudulent returns and Amazon's complete failure to process them properly.

I don't think, Amazon work with Apple. So something else must've happened unless you have legitimate proof? They didn't deny my lightning pair that someone swapped in my case.

Legitimate proof of what? The fact that, until I unpaired them, they wouldn't let me create a return? And the second I hit "Forget Device" it went through?

I don't remember the exact verbiage, but, while they were still paired, I got something like "Must Remove Activation Lock before proceeding" when I tried to set up a return.

This only seems valid for items purchased as new, btw. Just tried to create a dummy return for the used ones I'm keeping and no such question was asked.

I've been looking for these for months and just seeing this. What a deal! Worth the hassle IMO since this is the price they're selling for used and there are so many fakes out there... At least with amazon you can return / exchange.
