We have one of these mowers we bought second hand about 4 years ago and it still works as it should. I will try and check the manufactured date on it to see how old it is. One of the batteries died, but I bought a green works 80v string trimmer kit and routered the grooves larger so it would work in the mower as well. The string trimmer kit was cheaper than a new 80v lonely battery at the time.

The mower seems good and reliable but the batteries have known issues of crapping out. At least you get 3 though lol

Can't speak for the exact setup, but I have the 'old' non-propelled Mower and 3 batteries and none have died yet ๐Ÿคž. The self-propelled part makes it tempting... wish you could just subtract the batteries and get just the mower at a discount ๐Ÿ˜….

Might as well get the Ego with 2 batteries for $600 when the deal is active.

I have an old non-self propelled that came with two 2.0AH batteries and it's all still working fine. Battery life had dropped but not died, I bought a two battery blower kit recently to supplement.

I've been using my Kobalt 80v system for about 10 years now, and it's been great with no problems. Sure, the batteries do lose their charge over time, but that's pretty standard for any battery-powered gadget.

My biggest annoyance is how pricey the extra batteries are. You really have to snag a mower/blower/weed eater on sale to get it for a lot less than what they charge for the battery alone.

I bought my Kobalt 80v mower back in 2017 and it's still going strong itself. Out of the 4 80v Kobalt batteries (2x 2.0Ah and 2x 2.5Ah) that came with the mower and other accessories (hedge trimmer + weedeater) in 2017, one of the 2.0Ah batteries still can hold a charge and run. Instead of buying OEM, I took a chance with a 3.5Ah 3rd party on amazon for ~$100 and it's been working great for 2 years so far!
If anyone is curious, the 2.0Ah 80v battery can run my mower for approx 30 minutes on a full charge, which is just enough time to cut my 1/4 acre lot. That is with the blade height at its highest setting. Even with the other batteries going bad over time, I wouldn't hesitate buying again.

Does it handle tall grass well? Bagging and mulching? I'm concerned it doesn't have a side chute.

This is a 25inch mower with dual blades. Ego doesn't have that at $600.
That being said if a person doesn't really want a 25 inch mower then I agree (that size may be cumbersome if a small yard) that Ego line is a very good option.

The downside to Kobalt 80V line is it's limited to Lowes online. Greenworks makes these, so their 80V is the same platform. but unfortunately they alter the battery slots to that they don't work without modification of the battery housing. A person handy with a router can do it fairly easily, but I suspect that isn't most people and plus is compromises the warranty.
One good thing is that Kobalt 80V and Greenworks 80V does have good sales fairly often, but so does most of the competition

When I bought my first home, I went with Kobalt for all my outdoor stuff. Lawn mower, weed whacker, leaf blower, and snow blower. There warranty is incredible! Incredibly stupid! 5 years! I realized that Kobalt was ok but there was better stuff out there. So one by one, I just broke all the equipment and returned it for a gift card. The leaf blower and weed wacker were part of a kit which I bought for $179 as a price mistake and returned it 3 years later for a $379 full price gift card.

A lot of this depends on where you live I think. I live in PA with thick Kentucky bluegrass and that's the big question on how this handles that level of thick heavy grass vs. a gas mower.
