Just FYI, when you ask this a question, 95% of the time it will just pull up a website and not audibly respond with an answer.

man. even at this price im nervous about investing in google home devices until i see some sort of indication that they arent going to phase assistant out completely for gemini nonsense.

If this was even 2 years ago, I would be all over it. But Google has done a great job of making my existing one super frustrating to use

Exactly. Google has given up untold goodwill in terms of not only hardware but also software. I don't keep up with the specifics of who is in charge and whatnot, but they've lost all goodwill on my end. I moved to Android after iPhone4 ages ago, and android has just gotten worse and their entire suite of products have followed suit, especially in recent years. Android is hanging by a thread for me, absolutely no motion, just bloat and catching up.

They had an open opportunity to own the home automation space and they squandered it and I just cant wrap my head around it besides awful, awful management because we all know they have the engineers to do anything

The reason I'm upgrading is supposedly it has a extra mic. My first gen seems to have hearing problems

really wish they would put real AI in these. The alexa + is slightly better than the last really dumb alexa but nowhere near chat gpt or any other llm model that is out there. Google is on bar with the first gen alexa. I have these and the show 15 and they are glorified music players and picture showers.

People are too reliant on these things, echo, google, etc. They re cool at first but big meh as time goes on. Especially if you were early adopters and take the blindfold off.

It's nice to have them around but not rely on it as part of your daily routine. I use these only for simple things like asking weather, some facts, definitions etc. Ive been into people's homes where they blurt out and use commands JUST to use them. Like asking to turn off lights etc but the switch is literally a second away. Then of course it doesnt get their first ask so they have to repeat, then the delay, where if they just moved 1 sec it wouldve been done already.

I havnt seen much improvement in these things regardless of brand since the onset. There are just many--like those in this post--who are already way in too deep and invested.

I still think this is overpriced without having a camera. The camera to enable video calls might be worth it. But without, its overpriced. Rathe rjust continue using my phone with its big 6" screen. Cheaper the better with these things.

I got those old discontinued lenovo smart clocks (not with the screen) for rooms. It functions well as an alarm clock with a big simple clock display, has built in night light, has google assistant and could find them used on marketplace from unsuspecting sellers for $10.

Was really tempted, as we have a couple nest cams. Then I read the googlehome subreddit and remembered the sh!t show that is Google's hardware support. Appreciate the post OP, and it's a pass for this guy.

This is a great deal, thanks OP. For those unaware, this is by far the lowest price point of entry for an official Google Thread border router.https://support.google.com/google...8?hl=en-SGAnd those hating on Gemini... Learn to embrace it, the chained commands and interpretation of natural language blows Google Assistant out of the water. This device already has Gemini if you're part of the Google Home public preview and have a nest aware subscription, but Gemini will be rolling out widely to everyone else by the end of the year and it can't come soon enough.
Will this Nest device be obsoleted by Gemini, or will it simply be a firmware/software upgrade?

I still have two unopened boxes at home. Haven't had time to set anything up, but the one I DO have set up in the kitchen is working fine. I hope to find some cheap cameras that I can connect to them.

Say that again when you enter a dark room to change your baby's diaper but you ur hands are full. Or being able to see who at da front door without pulling out ur phone. Or wanna chill and play sum music when baby is finally asleep, without connecting ur phone to a speaker.

This device is so pathetic. Can't even change the apps on the quick launch menu.

I have this and it sucks. Volume isn't great and lately I don't know what happened to Nest devices, but they just became dumb. Mostly lags and doesn't work at least half of the time. Garbage!

The same with me. that's funny. I have two and brand new and boxes I have not opened yet. I have so many other devices that I keep forgetting about the other ones that are brand new, so I forget

At this point it seems better to own a smartwatch than one of these.

I have an Amazon Echo 8. I was assuming that this would work similarly and wanted to get it because I have a YouTube premium subscription. After reading the reviews the consensus seems to be that this Google product is an inferior one. I guess I will try it and return.

One huge benefit this device has over the Echo8 is that its effectively a screen for casting…it has a built-in Chromecast. Any app that supports Chromecast tech can be cast to it.

Basically just look for the chromecast symbol on a variety of apps and it should be able to project onto this little display. It's a great feature!

How would a smartwatch be able to be used as a casting screen?
