I installed and re-installed the PA120 with MX4 several times with same results, I believed that the paint used in these heatsinks may damper their cooling properties. Also own 3 old Hyper 212 and they still work flawlessly with old Intel CPUs sockets and some AMDs.
You may be right. The one I have is the SE model with no paint. I also remember that being an issue with some coolers, but I can't remember which. Thermaltake knows what they are doing, and I'm sure you do too. Definitely worth the $10, even if it's an older design. It still works.

This conversation has me curious. I just did a 7700x build and my PA120SE seems to be performing poorly based on your comments. I monitored between 75-85C while CPU was on medium load for 10 min syncing files from my NAS. Haven't run benchmark tests or anything yet.

Very likely a me fault for possible reasons you mentioned. My front fan is 1" offset for RAM clearance.

What do you recommend for 1) benchmarking the cpu/cooler to test thermals and 2) diagnosing/fixing? I used the stock thermal paste that came w the cooler

For what it's worth, I upgraded to a Thermalright PS120SE from my EVO 212 with a Ryzen 3600 CPU (that later got upgraded to a Ryzen 5 5600) and the PS120SE did run marginally cooler. Deal is dead now, but I'd still call it a $10 EVO 212 a set-and-forget no-brainer.. That said: I did experience marginally improved results with a different model of Phantom spirit. That PS120SE model has the unpainted aluminum rad fins and there was absolutely a 2-5c range drop in temps, which is trivial for those 65W TDP CPUs that never see over ~58c even at high load and 80C ambient.
The only reason I really "upgraded" was because I needed a cooler for a build that I was doing for my friend's daughter who was on a super tight budget. Her used CPU didn't come with a heatsink, fan, or cooler.. so we needed paste, a CPU fan, and were already going to be $20-30 deep regardless.. so buying something on my shopping list and handing it down just made sense. The PS was on my long-term shopping list for future builds and given that it's an on-air cooler it should be "good for life" (pending mounting brackets, case size, and CPU TDP).
In my personal opinion, unless you're doing extreme CPU overclocks.. which isn't all that advantageous anymore (especially for energy cost/performance).. the only CPU line I'd really throw anything besides and EVO 212 or Phantom Spirit on are 13/14 gen intels. Even with a 105W TDP Ryzen CPU, I don't see a 2-5c drop breaking the camels back and would absolutely recommend an EVO 212 if the price were right (even for $15-18 it's a steal). Even the X3D chips should run fine with either. But an EVO 212 is still phenomenal and there's very little need to upgrade it.

Absolutely agree with you. I don't overclock CPUs or GPUs anymore, strictly using AMD now days since Intel can't get their act together and every time a new line of processors comes out, the socket also changes.
This 212 was $5 back on November 2024 from Amazon, I was lucky to get 2 of them.
