Ill never get apple again unless they make their RAM and SSD upgradable
You're never gonna get Apple again, then. SSD it's unfortunate that it's non-upgradable, but RAM makes sense because it's included in the SOC... so obviously it's not gonna be upgradable.

Yeah. Honestly SSD is the big one and basically allows them to overcharge and shorten the lifespan of the product you buy. Im still rockin a 2012 macbook pro after upgrading the RAM and HD to a 1 TB SSD. Runs great

My son is expected to have a laptop entering high school and macbooks are fan favorites... Is this worth $250 over the MB Air 13 (10/10/16/512)?

Absolutely worth it. This is a mind boggling price for the MBP. The greatest differences are the screen (one of the best laptop screens out there, and I do believe this has the 120 Hz frame rate), and battery life. Extra ports like HDMI & SD card slot are great to have and will save you another $50 (a decent dongle). My MBP M1 is going strong for ~4 years.

Costco has MacBook Air for $800. If your state has tax free week, use that. I got one of a friend yesterday. That should be sufficient. My son used an M1 Mac book air with 8GB ram for all his coding projects and robotics etc all through high school.

I went with the 512gb 13" MBA from Costco for $999 and think I'm going to keep it, preferring the add'l portability over the nicer screen and active cooling. If the MBP had the nano screen for this price, it would be a more difficult decision.

I dont even strictly need upgradeable storage so much as I want the tiers bumped up. I know that's been a tired old trope against Apple for decades but it's still true.
Nobody should sell a 256GB laptop anymore. Not when 2TB SSDs are closer to $100 than $200.
I'd consider buying a MBP as a trial run as a Windows guy, but I just gotta have a TB of local storage and that shouldn't require the top tier maxed out model

If you live in Missouri or near it, it's free tax weekend. It saved me an additional $135.

Can you update to relates OSX? I have the 2012 MBP Retina and can't upgrade to the latest or at least supported OS. Running Ubuntu now.

Get Pro. Better display, sound, cooling if he'll do anything cpu intensive later.
