Currently playing through 3 for millionth time on a retro handheld, I just can't believe they dropped almost all the original music from 3 and 4 in the remaster. To me the music is half the game. This set would be an instant buy if they didn't completely alter the soundtracks.

*Don't worry LavenderWhatever1234, I still own this via PS2 and can send you proof I'm not a criminal in case you are worried the Italian Mario Copyright police will show up to my house in NC looking for my Retroid Pocket

They probably don't have the rights to use a lot of the music anymore. I don't understand why so many of us haven't thought logically through this..

I am sure that is the reason, never suggested to what the reason may or may not be. But a game that leaned so hard into the original music it isn't a true a remaster....without that major aspect. My only point.

P.S. They could have just paid for the rights to use the music again....especially because they are charging full price for an old game. If this was a $10 remaster, I could forgive them but $40-60, naw fam. None of those groups are too big in 2025 for Activision to cheap out on the licensing.

I don't think it's that simple. Many of the bands, studios, etc may no longer exist so 20 years later the licensing would be a nightmare. They would have probably spent millions just licensing the same music again. IMO just mute the soundtrack in the game and play the soundtrack on Spotify, but I know it's not the same thing.

That is probably true regarding the bands after all this time, but I bet a studio or publisher owns every piece of work regardless. Even if the bands or the members are no where to be found. I doubt it is one of those situations they are trying to get some long lost relative to sign off on the rights (which has happened before) to 90% of the missing soundtrack...but I guess it is possible.

And that is also a good idea regarding the music, just turn down the soundtrack in the options and just have the sound effects turned up. Sourcing the music from elsewhere. However I'll keep playing my PS2 rom via my Steam Deck for free, like I said before, I still have the physical PS2 media so big bro can't say squat. Fair use backup

Even if they do find the publisher or rights holder, some may not even respond to outreach/bizdev for a licensing agreement. Some that do may not agree to indefinite approvals which would limit the game developer to a periodic licensing agreement style like in the Forza games (which means DLC). Some may not agree to other the aspects of the contract, usually payment terms.

With bands that have become especially big, getting their publishers to agree to a licensing agreement would have become too challenging, expensive, or restrictive to be worth the cost. Could potentially work with DLC, but I suspect there'd be gamer outrage due to not understanding how difficult seeking licensing agreements is. I'm sure Activision's licensing team has done their due diligence.

I'm not saying there aren't reasons for the lack of original music, just it isn't the same game without it. Especially not at a $40 price point. That $40 should (not could) have paid for a lot of licensing and / or a massive upgrade to the game, without that, to me the latter is worth $10. That's all I am saying.

I'll keep playing my PS2 roms (which I still own the original PS2 disks) until Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 is in a Humble bundle 5 years from now

P.S. Activision isn't exactly known for doing their due diligence or offering the consumer the best bang for their buck (but hey, it is their product, so they get to set terms). If this was another publisher, we probably would not be having this conversation.

Edit: Funny thing is, when other games get a remaster that changes 1/5th of second of cut scene, then the reddit hivemind freaks decrying "cEnSorShIp" and the game gets review bombed, here almost the entire original soundtrack (like 90%) is tossed out, and they don't say a thing. LOL. If this was a CGI butt closeup, perhaps things would be different
