These are getting dangerously close to my "pull the trigger" price of $50/TB.
Got the 4tb Crucial T500 without heatsink on July 20th for $200. And I've seen Gen 5 drives price going down as well
ya I've noticed that too, finally! jesus I've been literally waiting years for them to come down to earth. I feel like gen 6 is going to come out before I ever even get one lol.

I was able to get that SN850X 4tb deal for $150. Had to do it at that price.
Same, took about a hour to find an agent that would price match but eventually worked.

Best decision Sony made was using these instead of some specialized extended storage
Microsoft was great at farking up their console releases. Should have built HD-DVD into the 360. Shouldn't have done all this proprietary disk shit because it just massively reduced market share.

I feel like if they had built in HD DVD it would have won the war, The 360 was XBOX's golden era, they had a big lead on sony for a while essp earlier in the generation when devs still didn't have a good grasp on developing for the PS3. But making people buy the player seperately was literally the dumbest thing they ever did, you need that built in base like sony got with DVD on the ps2, and then bluray on the ps3.

yes avoid for sure.....no DRAM no shit.....
Someone needs an edumacation here. Maybe you have not been paying attention, but for the vast majority of use cases there will be no noticable difference in this compared to WD SN850x, which does have DRAM and is their next comparable product in terms of price. Plus this one is very attractive for a laptop as it generates far less heat as well.

If this thread was in 2019 you would be right, but it is 2025, dram is generally not needed when it has HMB except for the top 5% of use cases.

Bought one of these from SanDisk directly. Installed in an OWC 1M2 TB4 enclosure. Connected to an M4 Pro Mac mini (1TB/48GB), I'm seeing ~3,500MB/s write / ~3,330MB/s read.

For comparison, a 2TB WD SN770 gets ~1,150MB/s write and ~2,750MB/s read in a separate 1M2 TB4 enclosure.

Both NVMe drives are nowhere near full.

Internal 1TB drive shows ~4,150MB/s write and ~5,050MB/s read.

If I'm using a m1 Mac mini and a thunderbolt 4 enclosure should I avoid this and other HMB NVME?
Quote from TheRealWonderBoy View quoted comment :
As far as I know, MacOS does not support HMB over Thunderbolt 4. The disk will still work, but at reduced performance. If your only choice is an external enclosure, you would be better served with a disk that uses an on-board DRAM package.

Using an SN7100 4TB with no issues in an OWC 1M2 enclosure. And a 2TB SN770 in another 1M2.

Not sure about "reduced performance". Relative to what? I don't think there's a good argument to be made for having DRAM cache on an NVMe drive in an external enclosure.

For the 2TB SN7100, 5GB/sec is sustained for ~648GB. 129 seconds. A little over two minutes. After that, sustained post-cache write is ~800MB/sec.

In my case, the dramatically lower power consumption of the SN7100 compared to others along with its excellent performance (for my use case) is what made the choice easy. It's a storage drive. Full iCloud Photos download (>1TB), full DropBox and other downloads, etc. And its lack of DRAM is directly related to its low(er) power consumption.
