These are getting dangerously close to my "pull the trigger" price of $50/TB.
Got the 4tb Crucial T500 without heatsink on July 20th for $200. And I've seen Gen 5 drives price going down as well

SanDisk is running a bundle deal, $391 for 2x 4TB🔫
Best decision Sony made was using these instead of some specialized extended storage
Microsoft was great at farking up their console releases. Should have built HD-DVD into the 360. Shouldn't have done all this proprietary disk shit because it just massively reduced market share.

If this thread was in 2019 you would be right, but it is 2025, dram is generally not needed when it has HMB except for the top 5% of use cases.
For comparison, a 2TB WD SN770 gets ~1,150MB/s write and ~2,750MB/s read in a separate 1M2 TB4 enclosure.
Both NVMe drives are nowhere near full.
Internal 1TB drive shows ~4,150MB/s write and ~5,050MB/s read.

Using an SN7100 4TB with no issues in an OWC 1M2 enclosure. And a 2TB SN770 in another 1M2.
Not sure about "reduced performance". Relative to what? I don't think there's a good argument to be made for having DRAM cache on an NVMe drive in an external enclosure.
For the 2TB SN7100, 5GB/sec is sustained for ~648GB. 129 seconds. A little over two minutes. After that, sustained post-cache write is ~800MB/sec.
In my case, the dramatically lower power consumption of the SN7100 compared to others along with its excellent performance (for my use case) is what made the choice easy. It's a storage drive. Full iCloud Photos download (>1TB), full DropBox and other downloads, etc. And its lack of DRAM is directly related to its low(er) power consumption.
