Cant comment on the sale price, but I did go down a rabbit hole earlier in the year when looking to buy some boots for the Mrs...

Hunter boots used to be highly regarded and high quality. They were made in the UK using some special process. About a decade ago, though, the company closed down the original plant and sold all the machinery. Now they just have the boots made in China along with everyone else, and the quality and longevity is actually really poor. You're paying a premium just for the little rubber bit with "Hunter" on it because there's some historical cache to the name.

A good brand for good quality and well priced boots now is Kamik. It's a Canadian brand and makes some really good and reliable boots for about half the price of what these are going for.

I've had my Hunters after the factory moved and they've held up well. If the equipment and process made it to the Chinese buyer, perhaps it's possible the same high standards made it as well? I wouldn't be so quick to discount them but it's not to say either that they aren't cutting corners to pump their profits.

I'm not talking out of my ass here - their equipment was sold to Tigar Footwear, which is a company that operates out of Serbia and makes agricultural muck boots. You can also go and find all of their statements to their various shareholders over the years that they were very actively seeking to minimize costs since like 2014 or so.

But hey, if you're happy with your boots, you're happy. Not every pair of boots needs to be the world's best - if they do what they need to do, then that's just fine. I'm just saying that the "secret sauce" of what made the Hunter boots famous/high quality to begin with isn't there anymore, so if your goal is to get the most robust pair of rain boots possible, you may be better served (and money saved) looking elsewhere.

Wow and I thought I did an unusual amount of unnecessary research that didn't correlate to the price of the item I was researching, but you take the cake.
Anything else you research? Can't imagine what you go through when buying tires. Or even a car.

Car was easy... tires are hard, yeah.

But nah, it is just a giant rabbit hole with some of these brands trying to figure out what's "legit." This was a gift for the Mrs. so I wanted to make sure I was actually getting her something nice. Took forever, which is why I just quickly shared it here.

Ask me about Ugg boots 😅

Bought the Mrs a pair from Woot last year and she loves them up here where spring is known as "mud season".

Good price, but.... I had a pair about a decade ago, it cracked within like a year or two of LIGHT use. When I emailed the company if they offer repairs or can recommend a product/glue that I could use to fix them myself, I received a response that they don't and they can't recommend any product because their boots are made of this super special incredibly durable volcanized natural rubber that goes through a vigorous quality control etc something like that. I was like whatever. A $20 pair of rain boots lasts longer.
