What's the deal with everyone saying the lower end asus boards tend to be crap / have crap vrms? Is that the case here?

This is a good Motherboard. Even the M.2 and RAM is decent. Personally, I would prefer better RAM timing but most people wont notice.

Its priced like one. The higher end stuff is around $400+ for just the mobo
this IS a $400 mobo, hence the deal to be had.

asus had a bit of a backlash because of rampant QA problems with AM5; for this generation i went with asrock instead. no surprise to me that asus has to liquidate their x870 boards
to what extent the problems have been resolved with bios updates, i don't know.
the google summary says: AM5 asus boards had high SOC voltages that could damage CPUs, boot inconsistencies, memory training problems leading to long boot times, and BIOS freezing. i wouldn't trust an AI summary, but that does mirror what I was reading on enthusiast websites all through AM5 adoption

The high SOC voltage issue affects many manufactures, not just Asus. BIOS update fixes it.

The microcenter combo for a X870-E is 849.99 while this is a X870E-H.
This [newegg.com] is closer to what you want, but I'd check the motherboard spreadsheet [google.com] to verify it has what you want. Though something to note is that at this price point you still only get LED instead of Post Codes.
I'd say the microcenter board is slightly better but I'd avoid paying the extra premium for Wifi 7 boards if you can help it.

By that logic, would slapping a $600 price tag on it make it a high end board?

Ugh, Asrock isn't doing well lately, killing AM5 cpus, if you believe Reddit. Good luck. I went MSI

Is newegg gonna ship you a broken board and blame it on you then block refunds?
