I personally prefer the finer .5mm version which is the just right Goldilocks compromise between the .7 and .3 versions for writing legible but small detail notes on things like invoices or contracts. Turns out the .5s are also on sale for just under $1/pen with S&S:

But also, I also pick up really inexpensive pens for situations where pens frequently "walk away" or get lost by my ADHD. If you want a pen you won't be at all sad to lose, Amazon has a 10 pack of very inexpensive Bic Round Stick pens [amazon.com] for under $1 (10c each pen). They also have a slightly thinner point on that same page that is a 12 pack but still works out to about 10 cents each. The quality is mid, but probably the best I've gotten at this low of a price point. (And better than the comparable pens at Dollar Tree). The biggest negative is they aren't retractable, but I've had retractable cheap pens break near-instantly near-constantly so IMO this really a positive
Again I'm not claiming these are a better deal than the OP's deal, but I'm sure some folks seeing the deal lose pens as frequently as I do lol

But if anyone is looking for a good dirt-cheap pen, lately I have been using the Paper Mate InkJoy 100st, a triangular-shaped, non-retractable, 1.0mm pen that is often sold in a variety of colors. I like the triangular shape, and it writes pretty well, and I also like to switch colors sometimes in my note-taking. Recently I saw a multicolor 8-pack show up in the Dollar Tree stores around me for $1.25, and right now I see a multicolor 18-pack on Amazon for $2.99 ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074HGQBC4 ).
There is no mention of archival quality on Sharpie's own website. Also on their Q&A [sharpie.com], someone asks if these pens are good for writing checks. Customer service responds:
" Hello,
We appreciate your interest in our products. Sharpie S-Gel pens are not classified as permanent; they use gel ink that is designed for smooth writing but is not waterproof or fade-resistant like traditional Sharpie permanent markers. While they offer bold, high-quality ink, they may not be the best option for check writing, as banks often recommend pens with fraud-resistant ink, such as those labeled archival or waterproof. If you need more assistance, please do not hesitate to us reach us via https://www.sharpie.com/support/contact-us or through LiveChat. We're available Mon.-Fri. 9am -5pm Eastern Time.
Thank you!
