Recently, I purchased this membership after almost 2 years without membership. when I went to get physical card at the store, the rep their started arguing that there is no 18 month rules ... and basically said I have to renew my old membership. I said flat out that I am not paying for renewal.. and they gave in eventually but it was big hassel. I am going to be careful on Costco membership in future.

I don't know about Costco, but can confirm you can do this with Sam's. My wife and I alternate each year. I currently have a membership with her added on, and when this expires, she will sign up for a new customer promo and add me on. Have been doing this for a decade.
Costco makes it tough though because to qualify, you can't have been a member for 18 months I believe.

In almost 18 years of owning warehouse club memberships, the deals are almost always on new memberships. I haven't seen any deal on existing membership.

Worth it to pay just to get the coupon? 65 bux to get 100 off so technically 35 off 200 or 17.5% off some gift cards. Do you even get the code separately or do you only get it when signing up?
I would have a Costco membership regardless so that calculation may look different for others. if you're signing up just to get this discount, it's still a decent deal. I routinely see gift card deals here that show 10% off. many hit FP

Don't you need a new fresh email every time?
Minor hassle trying to remember what email used for current active membership

I literally just purchased a membership and couch yesterday -- think I'll have any luck if I contact them?

just cancel and sign up for this. you'll likely get a refund for your current membership too
you have to be a non member for at least 18 months before you can use this discount unfortunately.

For people that have Sam's and Costco, what do you use Costco for that Sam's doesn't cover
Honestly, just grain-free dog food because it's cheaper than Sam's Members Mark grain-free. That's because its lower quality and not as beneficial. For the most part, my dogs eat it.Otherwise I find my usual groceries are always cheaper at Sam's and the produce lasts longer. I remember seeing these specific grapes I always get at Sam's, that I saw at Costco. Same exact package and weight. It was about $2 more per pound at Costco. Made me start comparing more often.None food items, guess it just depends. For example Costco has a smaller and basic version of the Ninja woodfire grill on sale for like $200 or $250 I think. Sam's had the much more expensive, larger and better woodfire XL pro connect for $270. So Sam's had the better deal.Someone said Sam's has less Organic produce, but that's not what I see. Looking on the app, I see a lot. Costco app, won't show unless you look up the specific produce and word it exactly what you're looking for.Which the shopping experience is just leagues ahead of Costco. Sam's with their Scan & Go so you skip the checkout line. And their AI receipt checker, so the receipt checker like is incredibly quick and smooth. And their app is better, using my example above about the produce. If it was still 2018, then I'd say yeah, go for Costco. But not at all in 2025. Sam's has caught up and past them, meanwhile Costco is doing nothing to innovate the shopping experience, but just relying on the cult following. So, I'm not going to pay $60 just to spend more money for a worse and more costly experience when I can pay an incredibly smaller membership free for a better and cheaper experience. Getting their $15 memberships are incredibly easy with workarounds while impossible with Costco.

we use Costco for gas, meat, and the occasional electronics purchase. We use Sam's for snacks, pasta sauce, water, paper goods, juice and some weekly groceries. The Member's Mark clothes are also great at Sam's.

Costco has better prepared family food options than Sams, and they rotate more frequently. They also have more unusual food options (more ethnic cuisine, "fancier" sorts of foods, etc) than Sams. Prices at Sams for overlapping items seem materially better.

Been in a similar situation. The trick is to start the conversation by giving them your new(er) Costco Membership number, then AFTER the pull up the account you give them your ID to confirm your identity.

I primarily use it to purchase eye glasses for my daughter. Often time I see they carry Asian seasonal items that aren't at Sam's like moon cakes, hacao dumpling etc...Their pizzas are a lot better than Sam's. One of the things I do not like about Costco is the crowd, the long waiting line to check out.
