Normal price for a budget laptop. Best Buy's "Comparable Value" of $600 is overstated. You can buy a better laptop than this any day of the week. Slow CPU and meager storage. No touchscreen and no backlit keyboard. Nothing special, but if you need one, you need one.

I think you're overstating your case. 600 is definitely overstated, but this is a good laptop for 300. The processor is NOT slow at all, it's an i5, and the build is ok.

The RAM is upgradable, but it is a DDR4 as opposed to the DDR5 that is common now days.
It would be a good value if display was a bit brighter. 300nits is OK, but 250nits is NOT

In July I ended up buying the Core i3 / 8GB RAM / 128GB SSD [bestbuy.com] version of the Vivobook 14 ($220 back then and currently) instead of OP's i5/12/256 (also $300 back then) for a relative.

You lose 4 e-cores (i3 has 2P 4e, i5 has 2P 8e, benchmark performance difference is at most 20% so even less in the real world. Both laptops have 8GB fixed and 1 socket (i5 has 4GB in the socket) but I'm upgrading to 8+8GB anyway. Almost half of the i3's 128GB SSD is used by Windows but they don't use much storage anyway (and 256/512GB SSD are dirt cheap). The rest of the two laptops are identical: mediocre but adequate screen for indoor use, 802.11ac 1x1 M.2 card (it's not like people download GBs of data regularly so I didn't consider upgrading it even though a 802.11ax 2x2 M.2 card is around $10).
