A sternum/chest strap prevents the backpack from moving around. It will not take the load off your shoulders. A waist strap will take the load off your shoulders if the pack is fitted properly.

Thanks for posting OP! I'm in the market for a new EDC/commuter/travel backpack and picked up an Osprey Axis that was featured on SD the other day, but returned it due to its lack of a sternum strap. Can anyone weigh in on this backpack? I see there's a 'Frequently returned due to poor fit' warning on the page, so that's a little disconcerting but it also gets 4.6 stars.

Great travel bag that is personal item sized. A drawback is the main pouch zipper opening is on the small side. The compression straps help make sure you don't get flagged by airlines for having a bag thats "too big"

It's kind of both. By keeping the straps closer together they ride on the inner 1/3 to 1/2 of the collar bone. This decreases the torque on your shoulder than if it were on the outer collar bone or even worse your arm bone.

This is a massive 30L backpack. I have a similar size for all my tech gear, and it will swallow up everything I want to put inside. Some jobs require a ton of gear. I'd consider it way too big for typical commuting/edc duty. You might prefer something smaller, like the Arcane Large Day Pack [osprey.com] ($55 right now), especially if your commute involves public transportation. 20ish L seems ideal for getting around a city or carrying a laptop and lunch.

I agree that 30L backpack for EDC/commuting (by train/bus) is on the large side, I think 18L-20L are usually pretty small.
It really depends on your uses/situation. I tend to want larger for ~40% of the time I need to carry more with me.
Maybe something more like the 24L Axis that is on sale for $45 would be a better fit?

Proxima's laptop compartment does not have a divider, which is the biggest let down for me.
