Are there any deals on a normal fan that you can simply control from a pair of switches anymore? Seems everything of late "requires" a remote.

I'm not sure about these fans, but I have a fan that is DC and requires a remote, however, if you turn it off and on with a regular switch it turns on to the last setting which is good enough for me.

This is correct, the switch determines if power reaches the receptacle on the other end, that's how switches have always worked. With these DC fans, they do away with hanging cords to mechanically trigger speed adjustments and light on/off and instead use a single power source to make them "on", and rely on a remote to adjust speed and lighting independently.

This means as long as the fan can "Remember" its last state, it behaves exactly like an AC fan with a pull cord with a switch when you flip the switch into the "on" position. However, since all power runs through one switch, there isn't a separate switch toggle to differentiate between "light" and "fan" on/off which they may be wanting.

With the benefits of a remote, it is generally the case that the switch is left in "on" and the remote is used to start the fan and use the lights. it is also possible to use the switch for this as long as you want the light AND last fan speed to be triggered simultaneously.
