I have had the opposite, typically excellent shows up like never used, and tv's I only go in store pickup so they can turn it on for me so I don't have to deal with anything dumb.

Agreed. I bought excellent condition KitchenAid product and it should be rated as fair.

I got an "Excellent" Sony TV a couple years ago. I got it home and when I opened it, the tv was covered in some residue and there was nothing in the box besides the tv and power cord. No stand, cables, remote, etc...
The box was too big for my car so I had borrowed a truck to haul it and had taken it back right after dropping it off. I really wish I had tested it in store like someone else mentioned below because it was just about impossible to even test it properly without the remote or the stand. The missing accessories would have placed it in the good category and lowered the price since excellent means not missing anything.
You definitely have to inspect anything you get open box.

if you buy in store (or order online for in-store pickup) and find that the condition would meet one of the lower criteria, they should be able to refund and mark it down for you in the system, but it takes "a few hours" and they can't guarantee that someone will snag it in the meantime when it goes live again.

i've only done this on a couple open box avrs (home theater receivers) and maybe a large appliance because i thought it was worth my time, but you may not! also i think for large appliances they might have some more discretion to negotiate down, particularly if you're prepared to take it away in a large-enough vehicle
