A better version of this (990 EVO Plus) was $60 brand new a couple days ago (https://slickdeals.net/f/18605092-samsung-1tb-990-evo-plus-pcie-5-0-x2-m-2-internal-ssd-59-99?p=179075836). Zero reason to buy used at this price.

I will think a 100 times buying refurbished or open box from best buy based on past experience. Bought and external drive 'open box - excellent' last month and luckily it was a store pickup and I was able to check the condition and refuse pickup in store and avoid restocking fee (if any). the drive looked like heavily used with scratches and missing original data cable and entire packaging. was just bubble wrapped with a USB-c insignia branded cable

Yeah, you have to be really careful, there are people that buy new ones, peel off the labels from the new ones, and replace them onto other old or even dead SSDs, then return them to Best Buy. Most Best Buys will never actually plug these in to verify the serial numbers match against what they were actually sold in an actual PC, they will just check the label and box serial numbers vs what they have on the original order receipt info. People were also doing this sort of thing with other devices too.

Even at an extra 20 bucks, for something that is better in almost every meaningful way, and is NIB, that is going to be with most people for a few years at least, its probably worth it.If these things were 3 for 100, sure, good deal if you want to do a cheap raid set with them, but at this point and price, little reason to go with a refurb at this capacity.
My original post explained that the day I posted, Bestbuy added $10 credits to people's accounts so I bought it for $40. There was no point in spending 50% more for the same storage as I, and many others, are upgrading laptops that can't take advantage of the higher speeds the standard Evo offers nevermind the Plus (I am using a Zbook Firefly 14 G8, 3x4 PCIe). The other benefits are negligible in real world use.

Also, these aren't really refurbished, they're just returns. In my case, mine was barely used with less than 200gb written.

These Geek Squad refurbished drives or any SSD drives for that matter are just customer returns. With that said, majority of the time they will have low writes. I buy about 3 drives a year for the last 5 years from them and the most writes I have ever seen is 15 GB.

2TB for $89.99.
This post is for the 990 EVO Plus. You're referring to the older 990 EVO. Wildly different drives.

I placed my order on 09/23 and received it next day on 09/24. Installed it to my PC on 09/26. Used the free $10 coupon they gave out and also some Bing points for $5 BB gift card. Model Number: MZ-V9E1T0B/AM matches.

Couldn't be happier with my purchase. I must have gotten extremely lucky with my purchase because it seems like it was a straight return. CrystalDiskInfo shows it only ran for 8 hours prior and it is still at 100% health. Registered the serial with Samsung and I have a 60 month (5 years) warranty.

If you get bad one, just return it...

The 90 days is from BestBuy. I registered the drive on my Samsung account and it has a 60 month warranty for parts and labor. Photo attached:

Ordered this and it got delayed and got sick of waiting just canceled it. Ugh. They use ontrac and they suuuuuucccckkk where I live. I refuse to accept ontrac because it's either perpetually delayed or lost in shipping every time

I would be careful assuming it has the full warranty, but likely YMMV. If you need to get it serviced, they will likely request the invoice which will be labeled Geek Squad refurbished. A quote from Samsung support I found on another thread: "After reviewing the Bill of Sale provided for this unit, we noticed that the drive was purchased refurbished. Samsung's warranty only applies to the Purchaser of the Product in its original sealed packaging. Since the unit is listed as certified refurbished, that indicates the drive had already been purchased and the original sealed packaging was opened by someone else first. As a result, your warranty claim has been denied, I apologize for the inconvenience. You can read more about our warranty policy here: https://semiconductor.samsung.com.../warranty/ Thank you for contacting Samsung, and have a great day!"

I contacted Samsung warranty and they specifically stated that they would warranty the drive without a receipt based on the drives serial number manufactured date instead of the purchase date. They're quick to answer so I would recommend anyone to call themselves to verify this to be true.

Edit: The warranty policy you linked from the comment also states,

"In the event that a valid proof of purchase is not available, the limited warranty period will be determined by the date of manufacture."

So I would just warranty it without a receipt should anyone have an issue with the drive in the future just to avoid any possible issues.

thanks for the follow up, I'll check my serials and see what it gives me. the new drive is like 8 bucks more so it could be worth it depending on when it was manufactured.

If a new drive is only $8 more then I'd go with that for sure as the warranty period would start from the date of delivery using the receipt.
