An OK bag of beans costs around $15 for a kilo. We make 2-3 double shots every day, so a bag lasts us about a month. $180/yr. With the machine at $900, it's a total of $1080 for the first year.

Before the machine, we bought Starbucks 3 times a week on average, with an average trip being $12. That's $36/week, or ~$1800/yr. This machine will "pay for itself" in 8 months if you are a serious espresso drinker. After the first year, if beans stay the same price, you would be saving well over $1500/yr, even with filters and upkeep.

No but it will let you make good coffee. Better than paying $7 for Starbucks garbage

Last time with Target 60% and price was also 999, it came to 600
I got in on that one, and still returned it because it's the worst coffee machine I've ever owned. The lack of consistency was horrific, even for someone well-versed in coffee making.

For anyone wondering, that's about 140ish cups of Starbucks at $7/cup to break even.
Great to know this comes with beans supply

I've had this machine for almost 2 years. the tamping and measuring feature is very convenient. the Auto milk feature is pretty cool too however once you learn how to make your own milk it will taste better. the boiler is also very fast. I used a friend of ours lower end version of this machine and it took much longer to make the shot and also steam the milk especially. I think I paid $1200 or 1300 for it so this is worth it in my book. I also sent the unit in for repair once and they have good customer service. it comes with a two year warranty. we make a minimum of two drinks a day.

What part failed? We just replaced the pump on our barista express from 2013. It was serviceable. Good as new.
Pump and boiler. I had one of the versions without a grinder. Would still recommend Breville as an entry level machine, but it is not a BIFL purchase (also not priced like the semi-automatic BIFL machines).

I switched to a premium hand grinder, a Fellow's kettle, a ceramic Airscape and a full manual espresso machine. Bit of a learning curve, but the coffee is MUCH better. Also, the equipment on the countertop does not look like something I acquired at Best Buy. Smilie

Between all the real equipment that you need to make great espresso - a high precision slow speed single dosing grinder, the freshly roasted premium beans, an honest to goodness real expresso machine WDT, digital scales, specialty water, knock box, tamper, refractometer and all the other gear you can imagine - making espresso at home is rarely about saving money. James Hoffman (YouTube) buys all his espresso at his favorite local coffee shop.

For those adding milk, flavorings and even cocoa to their coffee, machines like this with colorful displays are worth it for the entertainment value as much as for the (average) coffee they make
