My experience is that in urban area you better off with an airtag for tracking. My kid's apple watch often goes into sleep or something which wouldn't report location, while airtag continues to update location.

Thoughts about whether a 46 mm is too large for a 5 year old? We will get the kid sized bands from Amazon...it's only $30 more than the 42mm and has a larger screen that will be presumably easier to read....

S11 has a much harder front surface, but that's the only other major upgrade. My S9 face works fine but is scratched to hell, and i"m just a runner and office worker.

... don't forget twice as hard glass for the aluminum models. My apple watch has accumulated scratches over the years, I'm a weekend fixit warrior. Though scratches don't affect readability at all. I know the scratches are there, and if the display is off, I can see them. Annoying, but harmless imo

With cellular model, does that mean I don't have to bring my phone when jogging and can still do:
1) Receive phone call paired with AirPods (although maybe with a different phone number?)
2) Make phone call
3) Use Apple Pay to make small purchase like bottle waters

Yes to all 3. It's the same phone number as your iPhone, it just rings on your watch.

The first two require a plan from your mobile carrier without a phone nearby. Some plans can have Watch calls go through your main number.

The last doesn't require a cellular model.

If you don't have a mobile plan, the main difference is that it can make emergency phone calls without your phone. (e.g. fall/crash detection can contact emergency services without your phone).
