Not sure about LEDs. But Ambilight was sold on their plasmas back in the day. I had a 50" from 2005 (50PF9630A) that I paid $3,499. It is crazy to believe what these sets initially cost relative to today's prices. Accounting for inflation, these things have dropped over 90% over time.

Anyway, Ambilight changed the backlighting based on what was displayed on the screen. Adding your own LED tape lighting behind the TV is probably just as good, gives you more flexibility on screen size/quality and may be less distracting for some.

The article I found said Ambilight uses "intelligent LED lighting" built into the back of the set to project colors onto your wall in real time, matching the colors to the action on screen.
