Got the email but already have 1year free Pro I think it was from Paypal so I'm wondering if it will allow a new account. Still, I haven't used it not even once.

They are trying to beef up their subscriber numbers so someone will acquire them.

I go back and forth between chapgpt and perplexity. Both are useful. Use everyday throughout the day. The more you use them, the more you will want to use them more.

The perplexity account can't have had a subscription, ever. I tried this with my perplexity account that had the xfinity promo and was denied. And the paypal email was ineligible for reuse for another perplexity account.

In the end i got a $1/mo promo email for PP so I'm using that for now.

I'm a fan of perplexity. I've used it a lot since getting the free year through PayPal. great with search and citations, but less creative imo than ChatGPT and other tools

I go back and forth between Gemini and Chatgpt, it's hard to fit in more than a few platforms at a time (one main and one backup). Well, at least with this thread I am reminded to go back and give Perplexity a shot but honestly, Gemini is taking off for me and it's hard to look back.

Use both Perplexity and chatGPT daily. I have an excess of curiosity about many things. Also useful in forum arguments and better phrasing/formatting forum posts. chataGPT helped me diagnose a medical problem w/o having to visit an MD and yes, it was a correct diagnosis and I am much improved after fixing the issue.

I hardly use Google any longer.

Bingo. They're constantly scrambling for media attention (remember when they offered to buy Google Chrome browser?). You're better off going directly to the source and using OpenAI/Gemini/Claude without this trashy middleman.

Perplexity is NOT a "middleman". Sheese.

I don't know what you are attempting to communicate with your screen grab but I went directly to the source and posed the question, something you might have done before spewing incorrect BS, effectively poisoning the data stream. Here's the reply:
Quote :
Q. Does perplexity do its own searching or does the service act as a middleman for another service, such as Gemini?

A. Perplexity performs its own searching using a proprietary search engine infrastructure and AI models, rather than simply acting as a middleman for another service like Gemini or Google. Perplexity retrieves information directly from the web in real time, indexes results with its own technology, and then processes those results with its AI systems to generate responses. Although Perplexity integrates some third-party data sources at times, including APIs, the core search and generation process is handled in-house. It does not simply relay results from external services such as Gemini but orchestrates the search, retrieval, and summarization workflow itself.

### Key Points

- Perplexity maintains its own web search and retrieval infrastructure.
- It uses proprietary and (sometimes) third-party AI models to interpret and summarize web results.
- The service does not just act as a proxy for large web search engines like Gemini or Bing, but performs and processes searches directly via its own platform.

Fair point. I should have been more precise in my critique of their business model.

You're right that their search and indexing tech is proprietary. My "middleman" comment was referring only to the final generation model (GPT-4, Claude, etc.), which is sourced from other providers (plus their own internal Sonar model).

My preference is to use the synthesis models directly, but I concede that calling the entire service a "middleman" wasn't entirely accurate.
