Fair point. I should have been more precise in my critique of their business model.

You're right that their search and indexing tech is proprietary. My "middleman" comment was referring only to the final generation model (GPT-4, Claude, etc.), which is sourced from other providers (plus their own internal Sonar model).

My preference is to use the synthesis models directly, but I concede that calling the entire service a "middleman" wasn't entirely accurate.

This post comes from my ignorance, but also from my Caution of the direction of AI.

The Tech Billionair's are pushing it a lot, it is cotton candy to allow you to "have fuN' and in 1 year or so, it will be "tool" to fashion opinions that tech billionaire's can manipulate the "world". And alternate viewpoints will be silenced and removed from web. AI will take the place of internet "free speech" and be high tech device at mass compliance or else ... banking, shopping, etc... will be "closed to you" , if you question the manipulated "ai".

After 2001, attack, the government created the security spying of all people, and didn't need warrants. Trump seems to be aboard this AI mushrooming , because he wants America to be leader in this field.

Again, ... life did change after 2001, and in 2026, AI could be new era start for global conditioning.

I found out very late so PSA for my SD brothers/sistas

Perplexity pro gives you other LLMs, but limits the # of tokens used compared to full blown ChatGPT. If you do the same search for ChatGPT via Perplexity. and ChatGPT, you will far more tokens on the native site to generate the answer!
