I will never not want firefly and the crew of the serenity to fly again. Too bad Joss Whedon seems like a real creep otherwise it definitely would have. Fillion is at the top of his game and was all for it. Tudyk too. With the endless reboots/returns/sequels out there these days.... sounds like a no- Brainer this would've happened had Joss not sh*t the bed. end rant. Solid picks for the most part. some very underrated gems. a couple stinkers though but at around 2.50 a movie (including tax) definitely a FP repped

You've never seen Waterworld? Dennis Hopper was peak villian.

Hellboy II: Golden Army - really good
Serenity - haven't seen
Repo Men - I think I saw in college and it wasn't great
Oblivion - good but amazing practical/vfx and music
Waterworld - haven't seen
Seventh Son - haven't seen
12 Monkeys - really good
Pitch Black - really good
Pacific Rim 2 - people pretend it doesn't exist so I never saw it
Lucy - has it's good moments but overall meh

No, it wouldn't have. The show was canceled after 14 episodes and the movie was a Hail Mary pass to try and save the franchise. It grossed worldwide about what its production budget was so that's a bomb because there is promotion, prints, etc on top of the budget. While home video was some revenue, only the most charitably generous accounting gets it to break even. Add on killing off two characters and what was left to continue with? The movie flopped in 2005 and Whedon's foibles nuked his career in 2021 so it wasn't his being a creep that killed any further sequels.

What sucked was his shenanigans killed The Nevers on HBO. I thought it was only a 6-episode series, but apparently they released a 2nd half in 2023 then deleted it off of HBO Max and only the last six are now on Prime. Huh? The BTS features never showed him, didn't interview him, he was the Creator Who Must Not Be Named.

Everytime I watch Waterworld I'm left with the feeling they just got to set Hopper did one take and tossed the script in the trash...they just let that man cook for 4 hours and it's amazing

They would ruin it like all the other reboots, I wish the show ran for a few more seasons

This is one of the most "why are you booing me, I'm right" posts I've ever seen.

Unless this dude knows more than we do about how Firefly would have been more successful if Joss Whedon wasn't a *****, it's really something to blame a show's cancellation on something that came out 15 years later.

Fox likely helped kill it airing the episodes out of order. I think I remember the Train Heist was shown first though it was the third or fourth episode because they wanted to lead with a big action episode. The Mal being shot episode was bumped due to sensitivity around the Columbine shooting. I loved the show immediately but some may have had trouble following even if they were ok with the western in space thing.

Serenity released the same summer Star Wars rebooted which must have been tough. I will watch it over Episode one any day though.

Serenity is kind of pointless if you haven't watched Firefly.

Not really, they catch you up pretty quickly (especially with the opening scenes).

bizarre collection, must have been huge quantities of random discs they had floating around? Like two sequels without the first, a follow-up to a tv show, a couple pretty good films, a couple mediocre, a couple awful. just strange.

The show was super low budget for a sci-fi series but the movie is the best one of the bunch in this collection. It didn't do well until a couple of years later because it wasn't advertised. Hell, I was a fan of the show but didn't know about the movie until it was on DVD.

Fox definitely killed it like they killed so many other shows that they actually gave the green light to in the first place. But as a lifelong sci-fi fan I didn't even watch it when it was on because the ads said "space cowboys" and it didn't appeal to me.

But even in correct order, it wasn't great out of the box. Whedon shows always need about a dozen episodes to find their groove. (As opposed to Star Trek shows which need 2-3 seasons to stop rehashing TOS.) First season of Buffy pales compared to S2 and on; Angel was a mess until they took out the Irish guy with the drug problem and made Cordy the Oracle (or whatever her title was). Too many cowboy episodes too early like Shindig and Jaynestown.

I was watching the DVD set for a review when it came out and mentioned in correspondence with a reader that I wasn't feeling it. They said, "Wait for Out of Gas and the ones afterward. If you decide you don't like it, I'll buy the DVDs off you and donate to my library." Well, I got to Out of Gas and then the trio of Ariel, War Stories, and Trash and it really started clicking.

Correction: Serenity came out in 2005, same year as Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith. The prequels began in 1999 with The Phantom Menace.
