On my stove it performs beautifully against cooked-on stains on each burner. Soap and water can't even come remotely close to scrubbing off those burnt-on marks.
Are you talking about a glass flat top stove? I have some stains on mine that even a specialty stove top cleaner can't clean.
Nope, the one im referring to is a gas stovetop.

How do you get the gunk out after it's been loosened? My oven is in bad need of cleaning but I'm afraid of the mess it will leave. Which is why I've never used the self-cleaning feature.
