You need both.
If you're in the USA, you probably do need both. SAE (society of automotive engineers) started way back around 1900 by Henry Ford and a bunch of engineers trying to pin down a standardization for tooling for that newfangled horseless carriage.
But as time went on, the only thing that kept using SAE as "the standard" (which news flash, it ain't anymore) were people dead-set on using it because "metric is evil" or some nonsense. They'd measure things in Hiroshima Bombs, Empire State Buildings, and Footballs Fields -- ANYTHING other than metric.
If you buy something new today, chances are ALL the fasteners are metric. Cars, appliances, etc.
If you have grandpappy's old rust bucket car, then that's virtually guaranteed to be SAE.
If you need to get a replacement fastener in the big box store, it's disgustingly weird that 90% of it is SAE vs 10% metric. It's always a game of trying to find "that one SAE bolt that's close enough to the metric one I need" equivalence.
