Electrical engineer here. The temperature (energy) required to cause these to explode is considerably higher than these get. The temperature to cause damage is actually pretty close to what a lot of these electric handwarmers advertise to achieve though. This is why they usually only advertise a maximum temperature of around 130F, this gives a sufficient safety factor. Good designs will have layers of protection to prevent any thermal run away situations. Up to you to decide if $8 mass produced Chinese electronics meet that criteria.

I'm a mail carrier and our mail trucks effectively don't have heat so I've become pretty familiar with products like this that can help get me through a route...these can be quite handy when you really need em.

The $9 regular price ones suck. Lerat for example last 45 minutes and don't get very warm. My $15 ones last 4 hours and get hotter.

Lipo batteries become dangerous around temperatures above 140°. Much higher than what the temperature is of these hand warmers heat to. And the heating element is probably attached to aluminum heat sinks that acts like a radiator, which dissipate the heat faster than it can ever get to 140° and the batteries is probably on the opposite side of the circuit board which separates that from the heating element. The people that designed this stuff aren't that stupid they didn't mount the heating element to the battery I'm sure.
Yeah and if they did they would have put it in the advertisement.Only needs to be charged once and will keep you warm for the rest of your life.

I'm going to try your linked one. Have you received yours yet? This one is only a couple dollars more than the OP. I only wished they'd have a percentage display instead of the 3 lights. Minor quibble. I noticed one of the reviews stated you could only charge one at a time. That seems odd. I have hand warmers I bought last year which has a USB A to split USB C so you can charge both warmers from a single USB A port using the included cable.
Yeah I thought the same thing. Mine is coming tomorrow, but I can circle back and post a comment with my review if you'd like.

Can I put these in my skinny jeans front pockets to keep my nuts warm instead of my hands? I have very sensitive nuts.

Happy to. Turns out it's actually not showing up until tomorrow, so I'll post an update asap after that.

Folks, if you click on an item you will be BLASTED with similar stuff. It's called algorithms. Companies love them. We hate them.

Problem with these and others like it is that they're dog slow to charge, typically several hours. After some digging I found one that claims to support faster charging using USB-C PD: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D9K6LKRT. Haven't received it yet, but looks promising based on the specs.

ETA: The one I linked is also higher capacity.
I just got mine and, right out of the box, I was disappointed for the following reasons:
  • One of the two had absolutely no charge on it. This is bad because lithium ion batteries do not like to be at 0% charge, that's the level that does the most damage to the battery. The other one seems fine.
  • The warmers didn't come wrapped or in a bag, which almost all of these kinds of devices do.
  • The above two points make me think that I got a used/returned unit.
  • It only came with one single USB-C to USB-C cable. Others I have usually have a splitter that converts one USB port to two so that you can charge them both at the same time. Otherwise at least another cable would have been helpful.
  • It only has two warmness levels, not three like almost all the others do.
  • These use a color-based LED indicator. There are three LED, the first one tells you the charge level, based on the color (RGB), and the second two are for the warmth setting.
  • They do not magnetically attach to each other (could be pro or con, see below).
In light of the above, there are several redeeming factors for these, IMO:
  • The physical build and size is very nice, better than the others I have.
  • Because they to not magnetically attach to each other, each unit can warm on both sides, as opposed to the magnetically attached ones that get warm on only one side each. This makes it very nice to hold one each hand, and also to share with someone else.
  • It charges using USB-C PD at 20W, as advertised (see attached photo).
  • The warmth levels are good, even though there are only two of them.
  • It has a capacity of 12000 mAh, substantially higher than most others.
  • I have not tested, but given the size and weight, I can easily see how each can be 6000 mAh (for 12000 mAh total. I often worry about the claims that these "no name" Chinese brands make, but the specs here seem correct.
  • Because they use USB-C PD, they can charge with almost any USB-C port and cable, as opposed to most others where to have to connect it to a "charge only" port (and sometimes only USB-A).
  • Also because it has USB-C PD, if you use it as a charge bank to charge your phone, it can fast charge your phone up to 20W, which have confirmed via testing.
A note on the charging behavior of these: They're using the USB-C charging protocol that actively negotiates the charging speed and power with whatever it's connected to on the other side. Hence, if you connect this to another charging battery (or your laptop), for example, it may try to charge the other battery or your laptop, instead of the other way around. You might one one or the other, depending on the circumstance. For this reason, some laptops and phones have a way to reverse the charge flow so it charges the other way around (I know that most recent Android phones do). Ideally for charging this, just connect it to a fixed charging source like a wall-plug charger, although you can do it the other way too if you want (in general a battery charging another battery causes a huge drop in efficiency, so better to avoid if you can).

A final note on charging, which is true for all USB-C PD charging devices: When it says it charges at 20W, it doesn't mean it charges at that rate continuously until it's full. Rather, these devices have a smart battery management chip that will vary the charge rate based on temperature, current charge level, etc. As the battery gets closer to full, it will charge more slowly. For the ones I linked to, it will charge at full 20W when it's close to empty until it's maybe 1/3 full. And then, it will stop charging for a few seconds and switch to a lower charge rate. This is normal (though not ideally implemented). Regardless, it does seem to live up to the claim of charging within 2-3 hours, which is impressive because this is how long other charge banks that are 1/3 the capacity take to charge, i.e. it's charging much faster than most other ones that are out there currently.

ETA: To me the pros far outweigh the cons, so I'm happy with this purchase, though it costs a little more than this deal.

ETA2: The ones I linked to seem to be now OOS, but hopefully the above is helpful for folks evaluating other options, or whenever the ones I linked to are back in stock again.

ETA3: Back in stock again lol.

omg ETA4: These are sold both individually and in pairs. Currently, the pair is the same price as a single unit.

The pair I got for $10 from another deal here ended up being 6000mah each (usually at 3.7v), and I measured the charge of each one at 5V at 1A, so that is about 6 hours or less to charge. Ideally they should make ones that charge faster than that, but it is not horrible. Also, the ones I got have all the features other than displaying actual measured temperature, and I would appreciate a shut off timer, which none seem to have. They are 1 or 2 side selectable, 4 temp settings, charge percentage numeric display, flashlight, and can be used as a battery pack.
