China stuffs are cheap not (at least mostly not) because of their labor. It's the manufacturing industry being so powerful (I.e. the machines and automation) and the transportation and supply chain being so advanced (infrastructure).

1. I have some business ordering stuff from Shenzhen. America made stuff is run by high school graduates or veterans who has no idea what we are asking for nor can remotely meet our qualifications and want $100 per hour. Our Chinese partners are full of Ivy League level engineers same for $100/hr that produce best solutions in the entire world.

2. My ordering of 1000 pieces of equipments are manufactured in Shenzhen and processed in Shanghai within 2 days including transportation. Almost same distance from shore to shore. American truckers can't even deliver anything from Elpaso to Houston within that time frame.

3. China doesn't have much resources. They import the majority of them and manufacture and export.

4. Electric stuff is a "stand out" that China really leads the world by a large margin. I as in the industry trust literally any random Chinese car more than Toyota. Any $10k new cars in China beat these $50k shit boxes we buy here by a large margin on quality, longevity, comfort, and everything. The best selling Toyota rav4 is just a joke in China's market.

What is going on is that China has a glut of these. That does not equate to a scam but prices on some bikes 50% or more off what they were just a short while ago. You can buy the same on amazon or walmart but it will be more.

Imagine a good leaves China and is sold for $100. When they ship this to US it passes customs. Customs check from where it came. China. Tariffs were settled at 30% by executive order in August. Importer (whoever imported the good in US) pays 30% and passes it to the price of the good plus whatever other margin to the final price. So in the end you, consumer, pays $130 instead of $100ish plus whatever extra cost the intermediary passed to this good. So, indeed, in the end you customer are paying for the tariffs. In the case of this product in particular it already passed customs, tariffs were already paid and are in the final price of $193. Without tariffs it would had cost $150ish. Hope it helps!
Yes, the point of tariffs is to make imported goods more expensive so they are less competitive and don't undersell domestically produced goods and drain our manufacturing capabilities.

We're talking about an ebike that can explode and melt your garage, not a 72 pack of ramen noodles

Don't keep them in the garage. As far as I understand, it is illegal to bring ebikes inside a building in China.

What type of vehicle (besides a car) would be good for traveling 2mi each way? Sometimes I take some small packages for shipping and buy a small amount of groceries.

It's partly correct... so lets say your domestic seller could only make one that costs $120, so they weren't able to compete with that Chinese import before... now they can and they will sell it for $129 instead of $120 before because they can. In the mean time, they lose any incentive to improve and become more competitive. They loose any hope of competing internationally. Everyone else moves on, improve their manufacturing capabilities and become more competitive...

Just FYI. China has law to prevent people to charge this type of eBike in house because many of them catch fire during charging. These are cheap bike but I value my house and my life more.

Thank you. Americans need to get it through their heads that Chinese manufactured goods (especially electronics) are better and cheaper than American made goods not because of an oppressive government making people work for a dollar an hour, it's because every part of the process is more advanced and more efficient than anything we have.It will never get through so many American heads though, due in part to memories from the past when stuff from China was cheap junk, and another phenomenon I'd mention except everyone's brain turns off when the word is said so I'll hold off.

Why would they lose the incentive to compete? Are you assuming there's only one competitor in the u s? That could be true in some instances, particularly because of how our manufacturing has been decimated because we give foreign countries open access to our markets without them doing the same for us.
Sure not only one competitor, but the entire group now gets a leg up which reduces the incentive to compete and optimize at the rate they'd otherwise have to against Chinese companies. Not all competitive pressure is the same.

Really?
  • Ryobi table saw near 30 years old used in home improvement business and then passed on to my son who still uses it
  • Not one Dewalt tool has failed me and some are pushing 20 years
  • Decades old computers with China parts and components that still run
  • Apple products with China parts and components that still run
  • $1 flashlights 20+ years
  • $1 to $5 hand tools of varying kinds that I have had and used for 30 years or more.
  • Tons of other household gadgets from vacmns, nightlights to tire inflators that have lasted me decades
  • The US under the last administration was going to use China products to supply the majority of our energy needs.
  • BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, and Volkswagen, China.Ford, General Motors, and Toyota, Stellantis, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, and Honda use China parts and components.
  • Boeing sources parts from China, such as vertical fins for its 737 family

We also have this
Quote :
Mars sample return: China's Tianwen-3 mission, scheduled to launch in 2028, could return samples from Mars as early as 2031, potentially ahead of U.S.-European efforts.
Crewed lunar missions: China is targeting a crewed lunar landing before 2030 and has made significant progress on its hardware, including successful static fire tests for its Long March 10 rocket.

Mars sample return: The U.S. has faced scrutiny and delays with its Mars sample return plan, making it more likely China will achieve this first.
We also have this.
Quote :
China plans to build 216 new civil airports by 2035, more than doubling its current number.
Large-scale expansions: Major expansions are underway or planned for many cities, including Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Xi'an.
Major projects:
The Dalian Jinzhouwan International Airport is under construction and will be the world's largest artificial island airport.
The Beijing Daxing International Airport was completed in 2019 at a cost of $11 billion.
The Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, which opened in 2020, is another major new hub.
Strategic development: The construction of new airports, particularly in western China, is part of a strategy to boost regional economic development.
What you state is just not true and anyone with open eyes and mind can see it. The problem is not that China is making bad stuff it is they are outpacing us in making good stuff. A country capable going to Mars and building airports and cities that put ours to shame is capable of making an ebike. I have three low end ones and the are very nice.

The myth you perpetuate does not meet the test of reality and is part of the problem why the US is falling behind. While China invests in educating its citizens, heavy and very advanced manufacturing, massive projects and production that put us to shame most US citizens that buy near 100% of their goods from China imagine them like they are building stuff in huts or something. That points to another failure of the US and its citizens, the acceptance of our educational system that is in collapse. It is not China that has to get there shit together it is the US and its citizens.
