In for one. Have an airtag minimalist wallet and dislike the bulge, so hope this works

Before you buy, just know that you will be uploading your data to the company that sells this. The company that sells this is.

Genuine question, if this works natively with Apple Find My and there is no app to install, how are they gathering data?

It's a bluetooth tracker and there are many known vulnerabilities with bluetooth trackers -- especially ones by non-reputable companies. Tom's Hardware did an article on this. I can't find it off hand but just know what you are buying and understand if the company has secure protocol set up.

It's worded to make you think it works like that but it really just says that find my is native to iPhones, not this card. It connects via Bluetooth and has access to everything. I don't really care as apple already has everything but it's certainly risky if you do banking or anything else that you don't want stolen

This must be the article you spoke about.

Thanks for the article.

The issue is that all tracking tags are broadcasting a MAC address over Bluetooth, that anyone can track. There's no personal information that's being transmitted (other than the physical proximity to the MAC address), and it's not specific to this vendor.

Yea seems to be it. The issue with SlickDeals is that they thumbs down you every time someone calls out the fact that most of the amazon deals are being purchased through 3rd party sellers from China with no ties to the US -- especially when posts like this with special promo codes are "paid for" posts where Slickdeals typically gets a cut of purchases plus commissions from Amazon . They certainly aren't looking out for you. I get everything comes from China anyways but technology from unknown companies is rife with old or bad firmware, little security, and inherent flaws. At least US companies can be held to account (somewhat).

But with any technology that connects to your phone (which stores location, passwords, banking, contacts, medical, etc) buyer beware and proceed at your own risk

Just have to call the BS when I see this. I happened to have worked on Bluetooth enabled GPS trackers, back in 2006 as a graduate student. You do realize that Tiles have their own communication protocol so it is completely different from iPhone's Find my? The article was exposing the communication security vulnerabilities because TILEs didn't encrypt them! That is not saying apple didn't either. So the product of the original post is safe, unless apple chooses to disclose your private information, which, to be honest, is actually more of a possibility due to the US agencies than a private Chinese company. If you want to sniff on Bluetooth MAC address to keep a track of someone's location without access to the app itself, in this case apples find my, it is just hopeless. The Chinese company obviously doesn't own find my, so it's literally out of their hands anyway. I laugh at people who are overreacting to the so called privacy problems from China. The Chinese companies really don't care about your location. It takes way too much effort to make money on those. They focus the Chinese spam centers not on the Americans, but Chinese victims all over the world. You are just too small a fish for them. Just think about how you can commercialize the location information to make money, in itself it's a huge effort. Companies that can do that won't be selling cheap knockoff apple air tags here.

My big question is how much are you saving by just going the normal method.

If you buy the 4pk for $65 airtags you get the same function for $2 more

Why the hell would you even bother risking a security issue over $2? Insanity.

There are definitely plenty of horrific Chinese products with nefarious firmware, but unless there's more detail than this MAC tracking issue (which is a nothing-burger), there's no vulnerability specific to this product.

If it required an app where you had to phone home - that would be a totally different issue.

BTW, I had no idea about the paid Slickdeals ads/codes, but I get it. Especially if the product is/was a sketchy one.

Agreed, although these thin credit-card trackers are outstanding for wallets. I bought a random clone of the same product on Amazon a couple of months back for ~ $9, and it works like a charm. It even beeps when you go into Find My mode, so you can track down where you left your wallet.
