Maybe you're thinking of finasteride, the other hair loss treatment. Minoxidil is fairly benign, especially the topical form. You might get an itchy scalp. Finasteride on the other hand, can have a lot more impactful side effects, namely ED and depression.

FYI — do not use Minoxidil if you have cats. It is extremely poisonous and even a tiny amount can kill them.

If you stop minoxidil the benefits go away gradually, because blood vessels constrict once again under the scalp basically. So hair could shed significantly after stopping.

I think they were just sharing a warning that most folks don't know. It's something you apply on your scalp on a daily basis so there's a chance some residue will be left on pillows and cushions, etc. There may even be some folks who forget to wash their hands after applying the stuff and then pets their cats.
Better to be informed about what could be poisonous to our pets. Permethrin (insect repellent) is the one I knew about but I was unaware about Minoxidil being poisonous to cats. Thanks for the heads up shigshag!

Other ways pets have become exposed:

Inadvertently inhaling droplets when the solution is sprayed onto the skin.
Pets licking at Minoxidil spillages.
Pets licking or laying on your pillowcase.
Accidentally spilling Minoxidil on your pet.
Mistaking Minoxidil for your pet's skin lotion and applying it to their skin by accident.

It's poisonous for dogs too. Most dog exposure is from them chewing on an empty container found in the trash or eating tissue paper that was used to clean off excess Minoxidil.
