I hear that 5W-30 is the best overall oil for lawn equipment like snow blowers and lawn mowers due to it's seasonal versatility and excellent performance in cold. Also if left unopened, synthetic has a shelf life of 5 to 7 years. Can't keep it in a garage that's not environmentally controlled long term though as extreme temps will degrade longevity; or so my quick half ars research indicates...

I have a 15 year old lawn mower that I've run on diesel oil 15w-40, 10w-50 motorcycle oil, 30 weight, 0w-20, and everything in between. They're just not picky engines so long as you change the oil. But yes, 5w-30 pretty much the no brainier oil if you had to just pick one.
