This might be an unpopular opinion, but I believe if you're going for the pro, you need to get 32 GB of RAM and a 1TB SD. Having gone through several Silicon MacBook Airs and Pros, I can confidently say that if you don't care for slightly bigger and better screens, then in almost every case, the Air is a better deal than the Pro. But if you're a pro, then I would recommend investing in bigger memory and larger storage.

Maybe, but probably not much. M5 isn't really replacing the Pro/Max with more cpu/gpu cores.

Yeah I agree. the base pro is kind of a weird option considering the air uses the exact same processor as the air

The frustrating thing about how Apple laddering their products is that most of the actually "pro" specs with bigger RAM are CTO. Eg M4 32GB 1TB is a $2200 MSRP CTO, M4 Pro 48GB 512GB is a $2400 MSRP CTO, and almost no retailers stock these (except for BHP or Adorama), meaning no refurbs available at all. If I want one with stock config >= 32GB RAM I'm immediately looking at a $3200 M4 Max 16 inch, which is too bulky to my usage :/
