Can you still buy them at duty-free stores? I heard that was a cheap way to buy them the same day (if they happen to have them in-stock) in Dubai and Amsterdam
Yes, and I've even some actual AD run Rolex Stores in certain airports. That's the best chance to get one as they don't really have "good" customers that buy other stuff. Of course, the odds of them having one while you happened to be passing through that airport is going to be exceedingly rare (unless you travel a lot I suppose and one of those airports is your home airport).

That my friend is playing the game! It's proven it's not supply/demand but they are artificially holding the supply
Not true at all. The only one I know that they "hold" (for big customers) is the SS Daytonas (I've had a few AD's admit this). The other models, they don't hold. They will reserve "hot" new models that were just release for their good customers as they come into inventory but after those people are all taken care of (or pass on the model), they don't hold. After I picked mine up, I was talking to the sales guys and he told me the entire shipment that came in that day (all models), sold out by 2pm. Think about it, if they're sitting on inventory, that means no sales, rent in the places these stores are at isn't cheap. They have to keep the ball rolling.

Just like so many other "previously" luxurious things (like airport lounge access, driving a $100k car, living in a million dollar house, having a platinum credit card or flying business class) Rolex stainless sports models have too become increasingly mainstream and attainable by more people. The real bawlers have already moved onto things most people haven't even heard of. Hence the decreased supply and wild demand. Credit card debt has become a lot less feared by many!
