That said, they're pretty great for cutting drywall or plunge-cutting plywood, and even detail sanding.

I used mine to cut up cardboards, u can buy the cardboard blades off Amazon for cheap.
Multi-tools are great for cutting various materials in tight quarters, especially when you need to be sure not to damage nearby materials and making cuts in-plane. A good example is undercutting door jambs for laying hardwood or floating (LVP/engineered wood) flooring.

Just curious if i go to the subcompact one of it, if there are any substantial tradeoffs in power on M12 3 or 4ah batteries, and if that entertaining the hammer drill version is pointless. I'd still have my M18 if i needed to go into real masonry or whatever.

My only advice for the around-the-house stuff is to stick with the quick change bits, instead of the drill chuck.
The multi tool does a lot. It's oscillates (shakes very fast).
So it can be used for sanding, cutting, nearly anything that is cutting adjacent.
I've used it to sand down the tops of doors, to sand down a drywall patch. I've used it to cut a hole in a wood door for a cat door. I've used it to cut a metal screen door (also for a cat door).
There's alsoo an attachment that cuts perfect junction boxes into drywall too.
If you're getting into diy stuff it's a great little device that fills the role of a sander, grinder, and saw.
