If I buy at promotional rate pay for 3 months and then cancel the service, do I get to keep the phone without any further payments?

This offer has been there for a while. The phone is almost impossible to unlock and also "unconfirmed" rumour - Best Buy rejected a similar phone from boost as trade in device

So $230 before tax. No mention of unlocking so I'll assume it will unlock after 1 year. A great deal for one's kids who don't need phone/data service!

According to Gemini when it read that document: Based on the Boost Mobile Unlocking Policy, the time before a phone is unlocked depends on whether it is a Prepaid or Postpaid device: * Prepaid Devices: A device becomes eligible for unlocking upon request after it has been active on the Boost Mobile network for at least twelve (12) months and has been used with an eligible Monthly Plan for the preceding twelve months, along with meeting other requirements (like having no outstanding balance). * Postpaid Devices: The device will be unlocked automatically within two business days after it becomes eligible (e.g., after you successfully complete your financing plan or Retail Installment Contract).

So it looks like you're paying for at least 3 months of service @$60 a month. That's $180 + $49 if you switch your number or $99 for a new number.
Al you're looking at $230-$280 plus any applicable tax AND once you stop paying 3 months of service you'll have to wait another 9 months for the phone to unlock?

I don't know about this one.

The Apple Store will not take a 16e in-trade because it is still a current model.

I think you have to pay for 12 months of service to unlock. which is why I'm not sure. The Boost mobile terms say 12 months of active service.
