The Razr 2024 deal is mainly attractive as a cheap way to get a foldable phone and, for some units, a path to Metro or T Mobile unlock. The phone includes a preinstalled screen protector, ships without a signature requirement, and can be activated with eSIM or a physical SIM. The biggest draw is the low first month price, with extra lines sometimes dropping to $30 or $35. The main catch is unlock uncertainty, since success appears tied to Android 14 and older security patches, while Android 15 or later updates often trigger server errors or a 180 day lock message. Screen durability and fold damage also remain a concern, making it a tempting but risky pickup.

What determines the ability to unlock is the original firmware version. The security update can install with the core firmware remaining the same. On Android 14 core the security updates go Late 2024, Jan 2025 then finally March 2025 they should pause at that point until the phone updates to A15 then it will continue up until October 2025.

Once core firmware has been updated there are certain aspects of the phone that can not be downgraded due to anti-rollback features and why trying to flash an older firmware does not make a phone eligible to unlock.

When you update the core firmware it installs the latest security update up to the point of the core firmwares release.

From user reports it seem the core firmware version cutoff is November 2024 manufacturing date phones. Those can be unlocked if on the original late 2024 security update or if only the security was updated to Jan 2025. If you were sent a phone with Jan 2025 A14 core firmware and Jan 2025 security update it appears the software unlock does not work
Does Android 14 unlock tool unlock persist if you later update to Android 15?

It's a real permanent unlock, no different than if you had waited 365 days for Metro to approve it.The phone will remain network unlocked, safe to update or factory reset.

I've used mine for tinkering/watching videos/taking pics over the past few months but randomly this week it started overheating in my pocket and now is stuck in a perpetual bootloop.

Has anyone had such a problem?
