Only mildly related, but if you do sign up, go into your Account page and turn off auto-renewal. They'll randomly do events to encourage people to turn on auto-renewal, and you can get free stuff. The last few times I did this, I got 2 pounds of candy, a freezer bag, and a nice big sturdy Costco tote.

Costco is usually quite thorough in checking whether you are a new customer. Their definition of new customer is 18 months since the previous membership expired. Tricks that work with Sam's Club, I.e. using different email, number credit card etc. usually don't work with Costco cause they have a team that verifies your information. You might get lucky by trying new number etc., but it's definitely YMMV at that point. I was a Costco member and waited 18 months after my membership lapsed.

In fact they are a bit too strict sometimes and err on the side of rejection. I signed up again just after the 18 month expiry and somehow still didn't get the gift card. I called customer service and they said the verification team had rejected it. I requested escalation, since I was legitimately beyond the cooldown period, and a few days later I got the gift card.

So, what is a new account? I have never been a paying Costco member (I know it's crazy), but I have had a sign in account with them because you cannot see the prices sometimes if you don't log in to the app or their site. Does that count as not a "new" account? I can always use a different email to make another account to claim this and finally become a Costco member for a year, but I would rather not have to make another account since I have never had a Costco membership in the past, so it should apply to me anyways?

Free account should not be a problem. After my original membership expired (for which I had claimed $40 gift card), I waited 18 months and signed up again via the same account. And they honored the $40 gift card again for the same account (though like I said, I had to go through customer service, that's not typically the case). Point is if they honored my same account as 'new' on my second re-up, if you've never paid for a Costco membership, you should definitely qualify. No need to create another account.

Make sure to use a different name and email if you plan to make a new account. They didn't send out the shop card for me because of that lol. Refund was easy though, it'll be through Costco not Groupon.
