Strikes me as a much better deal, no? 2x48GB, PC6000, CL36, DDR5 -- just $330, or $30 less $$. Takes up only 2 slots, same amount of RAM, less money. Typical 5% off with Amazon Visa, 5% off with Student Discount (if you quality, signed up, etc.). Fast delivery....
Non binary RAM is gross, stick to base 2 like the gods intended.
As long as DRAM scaling remains slow, it's here to stay. We got the 64 GB DDR5 UDIMMs earlier this year. If we get a larger capacity DDR5 module, it's going to be 96 GB. Then it would be your only choice if you want the maximum amount possible.
DRAM capacity growth might speed up again once 3D DRAM hits the market, but that's debuting in the 2030s. It could be up to 10 years before it takes off.

hope this isn't going to copy the GPU price playbook but I kind of know they are

Prices will drop eventually, especially if the AI bubble bursts.
