Never made a tortilla. Never aspired to make a tortilla but I'm within a hair of buying this. I hate you slickdeals.

Had to check what brand I got. Exact same one. Totally worth it at regular price and price history shows this is lowest price, though it frequently gets reduced. Bought it after rolling out almond flour/flax tortillas one time. Took forever to roll out by hand. Pop a ball in this (2 oz if you want 6"), press, perfect even circle, done. Use parchment paper on top and bottom. Only thing I wish is it was bigger for burrito shell size. But 10" one is expensive. Going to get one for a friend who also can't eat regular shells.

Hmmm. Wouldn't this be great for smashing out some burger patties, too?

Homemade corn tortillas are so much better than store-bought, they're not even comparable products. If you've never had homemade tortillas, you've never had a taco.

Easily one of the most worthwhile kitchen gadgets. They don't take up much space.

No idea why you'd want cast iron though, never had a problem with aluminum and it's much lighter, should be more durable, and far cheaper than this product.

No.

The hinge means things smoosh unevenly, like a wedge shape. You only get away with it for tortillas because they are so very thin. For burgers, even thin smash burgers, a tortilleria would suck.

And the main point of smash burgers is to smash them into the pan so that the meat on the bottom gets good contact with the hot surface. Pre-smashing them before putting them onto the hot surface largely defeats the purpose.

I have a silver version, I'm guessing it's just not seasoned? Great little tool but I will admit, 90% of the time I grab fresh corn tortillas from my local Mexican market instead. It's so cheap and basically tastes the same
No, yours is probably made of aluminum. This is cast iron.

lmafo at the marketing material:
"Weak metal is a single-tasker"

wtf are they talking about.

How is aluminum "weak", and how tf does the metal it's made of make it a "single tasker"? it's literally a tortilla press of course it's a single tasker

This is a good one. I've used it for years. You need to get a plastic ziploc bag or some other food safe plastic or parchment paper and put the masa between the two pieces. I usually cut a gallon ziploc bag down the sides and then in half so it's just two pieces. This way the masa stays inside the plastic and you can easily peel the tortilla off. Same goes for plantains if you want to make patacones. Do not try to put the masa directly on the press. It will stick and not work and just make a mess.

Since the press works a bit unevenly you can press once then rotate the tortilla 180 degrees and press again. This will give you flat tortillas.

Do not press very hard. Cast iron is brittle and you can break the handle from too much force. Because this is cast iron the top plate is heavy and you don't need to press very hard.

This is not for heating tortillas or cooking them. You press them on this then cook them on a comal/griddle. I've used lodge cast iron and carbon steel griddles/comals. If you have a Debuyer carbon steel crepe pan that works well too.
