Newb to cycling here. Is there any point to getting one of these "trainers" if I already have a good Echelon bike to ride indoors? Is it just to put the miles on the rig you're going to race with?

They're if you use Zwift -- in fact the trainer having a Zwift Cog premounted on it rather than a traditional cassette means it only really works with Zwift. If you don't intent to pay the subscription for Zwift there's little need for a trainer.

Um. yeah. using your rig could be a pros(cons would be putting unnecessary stress on your rig if high end)

This would be most attractive for zwift or other virtual training system. You can ride or race with your power output, and the resistance changes with the slope of the virtual world.

If not doing zwift stuff, then the benefit is indoor training with power meter.

Your indoor workout bike might have one(or you can install one). If you install your own power meter, you can also zwift. Gotta say though without automatic resistance change, it's kind of boring.

Ah this has the zwift cog 🤣 yeah looks like the click shift only works with Zwift. So if not on zwift, you have a smart trainer with a single 14 tooth cog. Is that a problem for a smart trainer, I'm not sure. I hated mechanically shifting under load on a smart trainer.. but adjusting resistance only through apps sounds annoying.

Should be nothing stopping you from installing your own cassette if you don't want to use the zwift cog.I use an older kickr exclusively for TrainerRoad and therefore never use the shifter anyway. More power to the folks that enjoy the social aspect of zwift but I'm cool w having a tv show or games or do work (trackball on a contraption and BT keyboard on aero bars) while I get some z2 in.

For what it's worth, I got the zwift cog for my kickr core 1 and it works great with a mod someone made (gtbikev) for GTA5 on PC where you cycle around routes in Los Santos, links to Strava too. For those cyclists who are so against paying subscriptions that we also play 12 year old video games.

You can literally play other virtual cycling games for free... Mywoosh for example

I paid double this for my kickr core way back in the day, and that was a used unit. These have come way down. I bike A LOT in the summer, both road and mountain, and this with a Zwift subscription gets me through the winter. I have an older bike I use on my kickr so as to not put wear on my main rig. I personally like Zwift. It does what I need and keeps the legs loose until Spring.

I have the first generation without the Zwift cog. I haven't used Zwift although I am tempted. The reason is because I don't want to pay for the subscription. I have used MyWhoosh and it was ok. I have a Garmin Edge computer that is used for when I am outdoors with my road bike and found that works just fine with this trainer. I can use a previous activity that I recorded with my outdoor cycling with this trainer. You could also build your own workouts at Garmin and downloaded it to the Garmin Edge which I use most of the time. You could also do just a free ride where you adjust the settings on the fly. There are many variables for a subscription free experience. My main goal is to capture a recording of my trainer event and view it later which the above has fulfilled.

Also, the customer service experience. Maybe I was lucky but I was having problems with the cadence readings. I contacted customer support and they had me run through a few tests and determined that the trainer was bad. This was a single initial email experience. Something I have rarely experienced lately with any product you purchase. They sent a shipping label, I packed it up in the original box and shipped out on Monday. I got a new one back on Friday. As soon as their tracking sees that the trainer is on the way back they send you the replacement. They initially said it would be a refurbished one , I requested a new one and they said a new one would be shipped. I purchased the original one without a cassette and the replacement came with a cassette, another plus.

I also had an old stationary bike which required a subscription to get a recording. I didn't want to pay for that so there was no recorded data with the bike. The bike was also making a knocking noise. I cut it up and threw it away. This trainer combined with a Garmin Edge computer has a lot more data available than my stationary bike. One critical data is the power data. I also use an old bike with the trainer. I am not willing to mount and unmount the bike to use it between indoor and outdoor. So, asking the difference between a stationary and this trainer, there is more to consider than just purchasing this trainer. You need another bike or two but a bike computer may not be needed since you could probably do the same with a phone or tablet.

Not so - I use a swift cog and in erg mode - no shifting. I do use TR and not Zwift but having a single cog is fine when using the trainer in erg

To elaborate here: the cog is sort of locked in to zwift but the trainer is not.

There are tons of other ways to use the smart trainer, ranging from other subscription services to connecting to Garmin head units for workouts to some kind of combination.

If you don't use Zwift just put on an old cassette and go.

I had one decades ago when I lived where it snowed.

It is an entirely different experience. Using a smart trainer like this allows resistance changes and shifting. It also allows free wheeling. The feel is much more like a road bike. The echelon and peloton also estimate power based on the dial and could be way off. It is very easy for one of those to have power estimates that are 100W off. If you actually want to use the bike for training rather than just spinning idly, this is the only way to go until you upgrade to something like a Kickr bike.
