This is the first gen model which is FIVE years old. The hardware has been revised multiple times since then including being replace by the smaller Slim model with a replaceable drive module.

If you're budget-conscious and trust Sony's refurb process, the CFI-1000 is a solid deal. But if you want newer tech, more storage, and an extra controller, the Costco Slim bundle is worth the extra $80—especially with Costco's support and warranty @$479.99.

Only problem is that Costco deal does not actually exist

Only a problem if you can't wait 2 weeks.

Depending on the FW, under or equal 12.0, disc models like these are far better than the ones without.... For those that understand what the upcoming userland exploit provides....
For a "new" ps5, price of the ps5 digital ed. Japanese language only model just launched is cheaper for those that understand Japanese. Dollar to yen is crazy good.

I have my PS5 out in the lounge hooked up to an 85 inch TV where I can comfortably play games on the couch with nice controllers. Or I could sit in a dark mancave and play them on a screen about a tenth the size in a chair half as comfortable. It's all about convenience. Not a dumb experience, just convenience and comfort.
I have a gaming pc and ps5 connected to the oled in the living room. What are you even saying?

I have a gaming pc and a steam deck but i never play them. The best games available on the pc actually are playstation games. And now that Xbox games are coming over, there is less and less reason to own a gaming pc. By the time the pc gets a playstation game, im already playing the next great thing on the PS5. I suppose you can play meme games on gaming pcs, but im in the millenial category. I don't get influenced into thinking the pc is the best place to play games by youtube influencers and social media like the Z and Alpha kids do. But im more of a true gamer. Not a copycat casual gamer playing meme games

for the maybe 10 Playstation 5 exclusive games? I hardly use mine for ps5 games but rather ps4 games or a few remastered games like The Last of Us and Uncharted 4.Only game I want to grab for my ps5 is astrobot and possibly Wolverine if that's not pushed to ps6
what's annoying is that the PS5 is one of the best consoles Sony has ever produced from a hardware gaming point. but this generation of consoles has been TRASH for games compared to the old days

They seriously fumbled their classic catalog by locking it behind subscription tiers and not having them for purchase/download. I don't normally get their digital downloads due to most of my PS3 library licenses not carrying over and they are now in the classics catalog for streaming.

A PS5 becomes less and less desirable as more PS5 "exclusives" get ported to PC.
This is why I haven't got one, either. I already have a PC and Sony has finally realized they're leaving a giant market of free money on the table be keeping their exclusives exclusive.

People often don't realize that every game you will ever play on a PS5 was built on a PC. They essentially just use DRM to keep it locked down to PS5. That's all "exclusive" really means, it's not a giant technical leap to support running it on PC, where it was already built.

Microsoft learned this way before Sony and is why their approach is increasingly running on as many platforms as possible now.

"newer tech" is misleading. Same CPU, same GPU, same RAM, same SSD. You're paying $80 more to get a "free" $75 controller. This is a terrible suggestion.

Every single thing you've said is true of a PC. You not buying a nice office chair is a personal decision. And the 1/10 screen size is irrelevant when you sit a foot from it, and the display quality isn't even close, PQ and refresh rates on monitors are way faster. And none of that prevents you from just putting the PC under the monitor anyways.

The value of a PS5 or X is the software... No antivirus, other distracting shit like browsers, email, etc. You're paying for software. There are literally infinitely more options and ways to enjoy content on a PC than a console.
Steam is releasing a PC "Console" next year with SteamOS on it (So solves the software stuff by making it single-purpose and still allows you to consume it easily like a console but then benefit from Steam's giant library).

Might want to pay some more attention... It is indeed "newer tech" when comparing the refurbed model from Nov 2020 with the Costco Slim (Nov 2023), including more storage. Tech doesn't just refer to CPU/GPU. The 'terrible suggestion is indeed yours .

Key Takeaways
• Same performance: Both consoles run games identically — no FPS or resolution differences.
• Slim is more compact: Easier to fit in entertainment centers or travel with.
• Modular disc drive: Slim Digital Edition can be upgraded later with a detachable drive.
• Better thermals and power draw: Thanks to internal redesigns and smaller motherboard.

If you already own a CFI-1000, there's no performance reason to upgrade. But if you're buying new, the Slim offers better storage, size, and flexibility — especially if you want a cleaner setup or plan to go digital-first.

Is there a reason you felt the need to waffle on about something so blatantly obvious?
