Seems cheap, but those cr2025 batteries will become annoying to replace.

I have a few of these and haven't had to replace the batteries, even though they get used all the time for over a year now. Different brands though so not sure if they're all like that.

I'm not here to give parenting advice, or to judge, but remember that these come with a hard/sharp plastic utensil to write with. In the event of a hard brake, or God-forbid a crash, the writing implement would be extremely dangerous. Personally, I wouldn't hand anything like this to either of my children in a moving vehicle. Just something to keep in mind.

I'll never rip a fellow SDer for politely sharing advice - ty for the caution (seriously).

Yes, they do have the plastic utensils. My children are old enough where they won't be using this much longer; we are comfortable with them using these while in the vehicle. I would be more cautious allowing a very young toddler using these

I'm here to give physics advice, which may be construed as parenting advice. In a stop or crash, the thing you have to worry about is momentum... these are small plastic devices, there's very little chance for injury. Given that the age for freehand drawing starts around 3-4 years old, the child is facing forwards and the device would not be inline with their face (as a tablet on a rear-facing child may be).

There's no issue with a 4+ year old having one of these in the car... The pen part is smaller and lighter than a marker, and much duller than a pencil. In a fast stop, the devices are sent forward, into the footwell, not presenting danger. Any other crashes violent enough to turn the plastic pen into a dangerous projectile would shatter glass and turn everything else in the car into a danger... and the plastic pieces are the least dangerous thing flying

These devices are a bit of magic... they don't use any electricity while it's drawing... the pressure of the pen on the board disrupts the LCD alignment and turns it transparent/opaque (depending on how the device is setup)... the device only uses power to reset/clear the board. I have yet to change the battery on our device after 3 years of mild use.

There are a lot of assumptions being made in your argument. 1) Plenty of people disregard suggested age recommendations 2) the plastic writing utensil is easily hard & long enough to puncture through almost any soft carapace of a small child 3) they are definitely as sharp as a pencil (I own one). OP may very well have only intended to allow their kids to use these when not in motion anyway, and it's their prerogative on how to use them regardless.
The "very little chance" argument is an interesting one. There's a rather small chance of someone walking across the street in a neighborhood to be struck by a car, yet most parents would avoid that danger for their children as well.
I am not saying that OP would ever allow any of these things to happen. I would like to assume everyone is careful and always safe, but that's not really feasible. I'm only pointing out potential safety issues for anyone that hadn't sat and considered them, because I care about the safety of any/all children.

These are amazing for tutoring. I use boards like these daily, and the batteries last about 1-2 school years. You can write on these with your fingernail if you want. Any hard object would work (avoid metal).
