I'm sure there's some glorified technical reason why USB standards are designed that way or that this is by design or whatever. It doesn't change the fact that I need to carry yet another cable to charge these. For all intensive porpoises, it might as well be a propriety standard since literally everything else is USB-C in the year of our gourd, 2015.
