Walmart:
1) you have to make sure Paypal is not a saved method of payment in your wallet. If so, go into your account and remove it
2) When you are in checkout, uncheck the box that says Remember Paypal as a payment option.
CHASE CARDS NOT ELIGIBLE
Here is what was sent to my message folder on Paypal. Not the A.I. chatbox.

I have checked your account and see that there is a purchase with Walmart.com for $XXX.xx USD using Pay in 4 and it is completed. Please be assured you are eligible for offer and you will get the points for it. Also, I would suggest you to not make the complete payment at this moment to avoid any issue with the offer. You can make the complete payment after 14 days. |

I now am pennies away from $1250. But $400 of it is in gift cards. All the points are still pending. I don't know whether I should do another $400 and hope that would qualify for 20% if the prior $400 is capped lower.

"How the 20% PayPal Offer Works (Based on What You Posted)
✔ You CAN have multiple transactions.
The wording says:
> "Eligible Participants will earn Points equivalent to 20% cash back on one or more Eligible Purchases up to $1,250 spent."
The phrase "one or more Eligible Purchases" means multiple transactions are allowed, and each can earn 20% as long as you haven't hit the total cap yet.
---
✅ But there IS a TOTAL cap — not per transaction
It very clearly sets a maximum of $1,250 spent during the special 20% offer period.
Meaning:
✔ You can get 20% cash back on:
One $1,250 purchase
OR
Five $250 purchases
OR
Ten $125 purchases
OR
ANY combination of purchases…
❌ But once your total spending hits $1,250, the 20% cashback stops.
---
🔍 Why this is the correct interpretation
The operative phrase:
> "Up to $1,250 spent."
If it were per transaction, PayPal would phrase it like:
"per transaction"
"per qualifying purchase"
"limit applies to each purchase"
But the text does not say that.
Instead, it treats $1,250 spent as a total pool for the offer period."

I ran it through AI, and it said:
No, paying off a PayPal "Pay Later" balance using a Chase Freedom credit card is not likely to earn 5% cash back.
This is because the payment to settle a "Pay Later" balance is considered a loan repayment or a cash advance, not a purchase of goods or services through PayPal. Chase specifically excludes payments to short-term installment loan providers (like Klarna or AfterPay) from earning bonus rewards, and user data points indicate Chase and Capital One cards are generally excluded as funding sources for PayPal Pay in 4 repayments.
The 5% cash back is intended for actual purchases where PayPal acts as the payment processor for a merchant, such as buying an item online and selecting PayPal as the payment method at checkout, with the Chase card as the funding source for that initial transaction
What really screwed me, though, was Staples. I had ordered a Nintendo Switch 2 through them yesterday, and the order went through using the pay in 4. However, a half hour later, Staples canceled the order for reasons unknown to me. The email said they needed more information, but I don't know what that is supposed to mean. That not only ruined that deal, but I wasn't able to use pay in 4 the rest of the day yesterday, and the pending charge will linger in the account making it seem as though there is a loan there that does not exist for who knows how long.
Today, I was excited to see that the pay in 4 option was back, so I tried ordering the Switch elsewhere, but during checkout I decided to change credit cards because one of my cards offers extended warranties. This pay in 4 was denied because, I guess, switching which credit card would take the payments made me sus all of a sudden despite both cards having been in my paypal account forever and their system allowing the option to switch. Now, who knows if I'll be able to use this again. If Staples had not canceled my order, life would be great. Now, I'm deeply irritated that I likely won't be able to get a decent deal on the Switch 2.
I had immediately paid off the monthly plan and the two pay in 4s that I had previously used, but I can't use the monthly plan anymore because I was denied on a second try due to having one already open, despite, again, it being paid off, and now I've been denied on the pay in 4 because I switched credit cards during the process. I have excellent credit and no balances on Paypal, but I guess I'm still a bum. No idea if either option will open up for me again before this deal has run its course, but for now I get to wallow in both my extreme irritation at Staples and my annoyance at myself for having the stupidity to switch cards mid transaction even though that shouldn't have been a problem.
And NO, you are NOT capped at $250 rewards on this special promotion for the period. That is a PER purchase limit. See my post along with AI analysis.
