Is there a reason why not to get this .?...say for running Internet from main house to garage apartment with 100' cat cable then using this to split that main cable from house to stereo receiver/ br player /TV/computer. ??

Just in general I think an 8 port switch makes a lot more sense. If you've got a cable running someplace that supports 1 device as is. This only adds 3 more ports because you use 1 port for the existing cable and 1 to hook up the one device that could have already been hooked up. If you are really confident you'll never need more than the 4 devices in that garage apartment then sure this can manage but an 8 port switch isn't much more expensive and adds 6 more devices instead of 3. Takes a bit more to run out of ports then. I actually filled up my router and first 8 port switch and ended up grabbing a second 8 port switch to support more stuff.
