This thread has been dramatically expanded to include a $2.99/month for a year offer, directly from HBO Max. You don't have to fool with the Amazon convolutions and issues. As I was trying to work out for myself, and glad i don't have to deal with the Amazon layer, plus it opens it up to non Amazon and non-fire stick people. I saw lots of pages of posts and sped on to the end, and I recommend you take a look there too and/or change the main post to include the latest info.
Hope this helps!

No. I just signed up. An ad every 5 minutes or so. Ad lasts about one minute and ten seconds. Too short to do anything but sit there. They got wise knowing a long ad every 15 minutes gives you to time to do something else.
I thinking about canceling. I'm not paying $ 18.99 for ad free but every 5 minutes is maddening.
I was able to sign up via Prime Video while logged into our Prime account (browser & laptop)...
we had digital credits that they used to pay for the 1st month.
Then, we turned on our smart TV, went in through the Prime app, looked under "My Stuff" and the new HBO Max sub showed there.
No need for a Fire Stick or other 'device' (just the smart TV with the Prime app installed was sufficient).

Although on my phone, non of that content is working, nor can I log into HBO Max directly.
I also cannot find where they charged me. Or where I can cancel the subscription.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
I should have went directly to the HBO app and signed up.
