HBO Max Basic with Ads is showing a Black Friday style $2.99 per month offer for 12 months, and it is strongest for lapsed or eligible accounts that can access alternative billing. The deal often appears inside the app or under Change Your Plan, with Apple, Amazon, Roku, Fire TV, and some browser flows all surfacing it for different accounts. The main catch is that eligibility is inconsistent by device and billing path, and the ads tier does not include live sports or 4K. Ad load is real, though some playback is front loaded or lighter on older titles, making this a low cost way to keep Max if ads are acceptable.

Common Questions (5)

  • It has worked on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Android, Roku, Fire TV, Fire Stick, and some PC/browser flows, but not every device shows it for every account. Several accounts only saw the offer on Apple devices or through third-party billing, while others found it on Android, Roku, or the web.

  • The ad load can be heavy: some episodes show about 3-4 ad breaks, often around every 10-12 minutes, with pre-roll ads and blocks that can total roughly 90-120 seconds or more. Some older titles may have no ads, but many shows and movies do include interruptions.

  • Yes, existing, lapsed, and even annual subscribers can sometimes switch to the promo, and the change usually starts after the current billing cycle ends. Some accounts that had expired months ago or were already on a paid plan still showed the $2.99 option when changing plans.

  • Look under Renew subscription, Change Your Plan, or Alternative Billing; on some accounts it appears only after tapping those menus. It can show in the HBO Max app, on the website, or through third-party billing flows like Apple, Amazon, Google Play, or Roku depending on the device/account.

  • The Basic with Ads plan does not include live sports, and HBO Max's standard ad-supported tier is 1080p/HD only. 4K is reserved for Premium, so this promo is mainly a low-cost way to keep access if you can live without sports and higher resolution.

Can confirm that I had to do this through the iOS app! I tried it through the website and the app on my Android phone... Doesn't work. Tried it on the iPad app and the alternative billing option for $2.99 was there. It's because it's billed through Apple. I had an inactive account since August FWIW.
I see posts that say it also works on Amazon devices, billed through Amazon. So maybe 3rd party billing through the app is the trick? Anyone try Roku yet?
I signed out of the app on my Fire TV stick and then tried the subscribe button. Sure enough, I was offered the $2.99 deal. So the key seems to be 3rd party billing.

I don't see it in my account. I guess I will get it together with Netflix through Verizon Perks for $10/month. I wanted to get Netflix without ads, but since I cannot get this, I will have to be okay with the one with ads.

When I choose the 2.99 option and hit continue the billing shows 10.99 in Apple Pay. Does anyone know if it actually only bills 2.99
Check your purchase history. It says I paid 2.99

Also have this option, thank you for letting us know. I've never had the ads plan... how bad/annoying is it?
It's great if you're trying to save money. My wife and I watch HBO Max quite often so we pay for Premium for Dolby Vision and Atmos support. I think if you're OK with 1080p streams and Ads, you'll be good to go.

I also don't know how frequent the ads are, but if they're anything like the ads on Prime they can be annoying.

Can anyone confirm if the ads are pre-roll or dropped right in the middle of a show or movie?TIA
HBO is ad free and Max has "some ads" ... shows like GOT does not have ads

It's a mix, occasionally the entire movie/show would be ad-free for the duration of it because the ads are front loaded for three minutes or more, then the more annoying time is that a movie/show is broken up with ads.

Their ads aren't terrible.
More than the ones on Prime Video, but nowhere nearly as intrusive as Hulu.

For anyone who's purchased, is there an option to upgrade to ad free and pay the difference?

I found the alternate billing button on the app when it didn't show up on the web browser. Try using the app if you're getting $10.99 on the web browser!
