Can actually get a slightly slicker deal if you buy from their website and use student/vet/essential worker verification. Student one just requires .edu address for verification

Better off building your own with an old PC and running TrueNAS Community Edition.

I have this model, it is fast if you have the router to support it. I payed right at $500 delivered in the summer. The WD Red drives cost more than the unit. It is supported and being updated al the time with capabilities and software. If you have the money and don't wish to build a custom system it is nice. I can upload all my videos when traveling to reduce the amount of MicroSD cards I have to carry for all 3 cameras.

What would you recommend? I'd like a 4 (or more) drive solution but when I price out a DAS and a low power mini-pc the price comes out similar and the integration is not as nice. I don't want to "just use an old PC" because there hardware I have is obsolete and power hungry.

Is the plus worth the premium if I only have 1Gb/s Ethernet? I was hoping to do some light video editing right from the NAS using my (desktop replacement) laptop, so I'd probably just connect to it directly for the editing sessions.

I was able to get an additional $28 off with veteran discount (on their site) fwiw. Might also be able to take advantage of the PayPal pay later deal.

I got 5% off for being old. You have to upload your driver's license, but it only takes a few seconds to get the code.

How trustworthy is the OS on this thing compared to Synology?

It's pretty primitive at the moment, though it is being updated, but it is not nearly as polished or complete as DSM. It does most of the basic things pretty well, though. Under the hood, it's just Debian, so you can install native packages, and it has Docker for most everything else. Overall, I've been pretty satisfied with it.
