Your plan is a gamble. You might go through all the effort to buy a giftcard worth $155, or less. And your best-case scenario is no more profitable than the iphone 13. And you'll definitely have to wait. Write all the numbers down for the 16e vs 13 and stare at them for a while, you'll see I'm right.

Apple doesnt offer a trade-in value for this yet. I also plan to use as trade-in later on. Whenver some friend of mine needs to buy a new one from Apple, I plan to trade-in this one.
I believe it will be higher than $220. More like $300, maybe even more. And waiting 6 months on iphone13 would reduce its trade value furthermore.
All in all, this phone can be sold as unlocked for $155 a year later for sure. Just keep it in MINT condition. It is a no-loss gamble.

Also, you don't need to wait any time to trade in to the apple store. It's OK if it's locked. And, it's locked for 12 months, not 6. They changed that 18 months ago roughly.
